Southeastern Louisiana avoids sweep with 3-1 win over UTSA

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana avoided a sweep with a 3-1 win over the UTSA baseball team Sunday afternoon in Southland Conference action at Alumni Field.

Jason Wageuspack picked up his first win of the season and improved to 1-2. He tossed seven innings, recorded four strike outs and allowed one run off four hits. Chris Province came in relief to pick up his second save on the season.

Caleb Barton got the tough loss for UTSA and dipped to 0-3. He went six strong innings, allowed three runs off six hits and struck out five batters.

Marshal Davis and Lee Todesco led the UTSA offense with two hits apiece. J.R. Voyles (right) went 1-for-3 with one run batted in. Voyles’ extended his hitting streak to 19 games.

Dillon Sudduth paced the Lions with two hits on the day, while Ricky Newman, Kyle Ginn and Tony Suarez each collected one RBI apiece.

For the third straight day, UTSA struck first scoring one run in the top of the fifth inning. Brandon Koger reached base on a Southeastern Louisiana error. Phillip Allen moved Koger to second on a sacrifice bunt. A single up the middle by Davis advanced Koger to third. Voyles’ sacrifice fly to center allowed Koger to come home and make it a 1-0 ball game.

SLU threaten in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sudduth smacked a double to right center field with one out. Newman got on base when he was hit by the pitch. Barton got out of the jam forcing Ty Summerlin to fly out and striking out Richard Imhoff to end the inning.

The Lions took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ryan Spencer was hit by a pitch to start the frame. Ginn’s RBI-double to right center plated Spencer from first base. A passed ball by UTSA allowed Ginn to move to third, who then scored on a Suarez infield hit. Back-to-back singles by SLU scored Bryan Frichter, who reached on a fielder’s choice.

UTSA returns home for a weekend series against Nicholls State on Thursday-Saturday, April 13-15, at Roadrunner Field.
