SAN ANTONIO, Texas -UTSA hits the road for a three-game series against Southland Conference foe Southeastern Louisiana this Friday-Sunday, April 7-9, in Hammond, La. UTSA Roadrunners (18-11, 5-4 SLC) at Southeastern Louisiana Lions (13-14, 4-5 SLC) Alumni Field - Hammond, La. Friday, April 7: 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 8: 3 p.m. Sunday, April 9: 1 p.m. All-Time Series The Roadrunners lead the all-time series 13-12 over the Lions. The Runners and Lions hooked up four times last season with UTSA coming out with three victories, including a win at the 2005 SLC Tournament.
Last Outing Senior Caleb Barton and freshman Michael Rockett led UTSA past Texas-Pan American, 10-8, on April 4 at Edinburg Baseball Stadium in Edinburg, Texas. Rockett posted a 4-for-5 night with three runs batted in and two doubles. Barton came in relief to close the door on UTPA’s rally and picked up his first save of the season. Freshman Andy Benedict made his first career start as a Roadrunner and made the most of it with his first career win. He tossed five strong innings, fanned three Broncs, allowed three runs and walked three batters.
Scouting Southeastern Louisiana The Lions are coming off a series win against Sam Houston State on March 31-April 2. They also snapped a three-game losing streak with a 7-4 win over the Bearkats on April 1. SLU is led by Jason Waguespack, who is batting a team best .318 in 26 games and is second on the team with 15 RBI. Tony Suarez tops the team with three home runs and three triples.
Closing March With A Bang UTSA ended the month of March with an 11-3 record, which included a season-long, eight-game winning streak. The Roadrunners also picked up two SLC series wins in March.
Extra Extra This season the Roadrunners have played in six extra inning games. So far, they have posted a 4-2 mark in those contests. Three of the six games have gone into the 12th inning, including back-to-back, 12-inning outings in the weekend series against McNeese State. UTSA is 3-0 when the game reaches the 12th inning and two of them have been won via walk-off home runs. The last time, UTSA played in at least five or more extra inning games was during the 2002 season.
Taking One For The Team Michael McKennon has been beaned 12 times this season, which leads the team and ranks second in the conference.
Voyles’ Streaking Voyles currently has a career-best 16-game hitting streak, which started against Dallas Baptist on March 4. For the month of March, Voyles hit safely in every game.
Multi McKennon Michael McKennon leads the team with 11 multi-hit games, including eight games with at least two hits.
Rockett Lift-Off Michael Rockett posted career numbers in the series against McNeese State. He recorded his first four-hit and four-RBI game. He also hit his first collegiate home run in the 8-7 win over the Cowboys on April 1.
Ruffin’s Stellar Outing Junior right handed pitcher Josh Ruffin pitched one of his best game in his Roadrunner career. Ruffin tossed UTSA’s first solo two-hitter in the 3-0 win against Lamar on March 18. The Humble, Texas native, had a no-hitter through seven innings, but Matt Lambeth broke up the no-no with a single in the eighth.
Ruffin Earns SLC Honors Ruffin’s picked up UTSA’s first Southland Conference weekly pitching honor on March 22.
UTSA Brings Down Elite Programs UTSA hosted the Baseball Express Collegiate Classic on March 10-13 and went 4-0. The Roadrunners collected wins over two Big Ten schools, Iowa and Illinois, took down a Big 12 program in then-No. 15 Texas A&M and also handled Louisiana-Lafayette to complete the sweep.
Saltzgaber Earns First-Team Third baseman Ryan Saltzgaber was the lone Runner to be selected 2006 SLC Preseason first team.
Voyles And Vasquez Garner Second-Team All SLC Second baseman J.R. Voyles and right-handed pitcher Steven Vasquez earned second team all-conference this season.
