McNeese State pounded 18 hits and 15 runs to avoid sweep in SLC action

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – McNeese State used a season-high of 18 hits and scored 15 runs to win 15-9 and avoid being swept against the UTSA baseball team Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, Texas.

With the loss, UTSA dropped to 17-11 on the year and 5-4 in SLC play, while McNeese State improved to 16-11 and 4-5 overall.

Senior Lee Todesco (left) and sophomore Zach Etheredge led UTSA with three runs batted in apiece. Todesco also collected two hits and scored once. Sophomore Marshal Davis and junior Brandon Koger each added two hits apiece. The Roadrunners used a season-high seven pitchers on the day. Sophomore Mark Ruffin got his first loss of the season.

McNeese State were led by senior Chris Fontenot who went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and four RBI, while junior Charlie Kingrey had a 4-for-6 day also with two runs scored, four RBI and two home runs.

Starter pitcher junior Chris Denton was pulled after giving up seven runs in a third inning. The McNeese bullpen shut down UTSA’s offense holding them to two runs and six hits over eight and two-third innings. Senior Cameron Chandler got the win and improved to 2-0 on the season. He went three innings, allowed four hits, gave up one run and struck out one hitter.

UTSA put up a seven runs off eight hits in the bottom of the first inning. Davis led off with triple down the right field line. Senior J.R. Voyles reached base on a blooper to left field, then junior Michael McKennon loaded the bases when he was hit-by-pitch. Todesco cleared the bases with a double down the left field line. With one out, Freshman Michael Rockett plated Todesco from third. Etheredge (right) belted a three-run shot over the left field fence highlighted the inning.

The Cowboys scored one run in the top of the second inning when Kingrey went yard to right center and make the score 7-1. In the third inning, McNeese State trimmed the lead 7-3. Senior Chris Coover highlighted the inning with a home run to right center.

In the top of the fourth inning, Kingrey belted his second home run of the day to pull McNeese State within three runs (7-4). The Roadrunners pushed their lead to 8-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

McNeese State chipped the UTSA’s lead to 8-6 with two runs in the fifth. Junior Joe Hulett’s single to left field, with two outs, scored Fontenot and junior David Leatherwood. In the seventh inning, the Cowboys added one run with two outs, when senior Tyler Dugas’ single plated Hulett.

In the top of the eighth, MSU took the lead for the first time in the game with three runs off three hits. Junior Thomas Zabasky led off the inning with a single. Fontenot’s RBI double scored the tying run. Kingrey’s two-RBI single to right field scored the go-ahead runs for McNeese State. The Cowboys pushed their lead to 15-9 with five runs off three hits and a UTSA error.

The Roadrunners hit the road for a non-conference match against Texas-Pan American on April 4 in Edinburg, Texas at 6:30 p.m.
