Ruffin, UTSA blank Dallas Baptist, 7-0

Box Score

DALLAS – Junior right-hander Josh Ruffin tossed a complete-game shutout to help lead the UTSA baseball team to a 7-0 blanking of Dallas Baptist Friday night at Patriot Field.

Ruffin fanned seven batters did not surrender a walk, allowing just six hits in running his record to 1-1. UTSA pitching continued to put the clamps down on the DBU offense, allowing just two runs through the first two games of the series. Last year, the Patriots tallied 23 runs in a three-game sweep of the Roadrunners at Wolff Stadium.

DBU’s Jeff Gilmore gave up six earned runs on in seven innings in falling to 1-2.

Juniors Ryan Saltzgaber and Brandon Koger and freshman James Keithley pounded out two hits apiece to lead the offense.

UTSA struck for four runs in the top of the second inning. Sophomore Zach Etheredge singled home Saltzgaber with the bases loaded and Koger followed with a two-run single to make it 3-0 Roadrunners. Sophomore Marshal Davis drove in Etheredge with a one-out ground-out to second base for a 4-0 lead.

A sacrifice fly by Davis to center field plated Keithley with the fifth run of the game in the fourth inning. Junior Michael McKennon added a two-run blast in the seventh to stretch the lead to 7-0.

That would be all the offense Ruffin and the Roadrunners would need as the pitching staff gained its first shutout of the season. It also marked the first time DBU has been held scoreless this year.

Game three is set for 2 p.m. at Patriot Field.
