Houston rallies for 11-10, extra-inning win over UTSA

HOUSTON – Brad Lincoln's walk-off, three-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Houston baseball team to an 11-10 victory over UTSA to spoil the Roadrunners 2006 season opener Tuesday afternoon at Cougar Field.

Senior first baseman Lee Todesco (right) led UTSA (0-1) with three runs batted in, while senior second base J.R. Voyles collected two hits and two RBI on the day.

Lincoln went 2-for-6 with a game-high four RBI and two runs scored for the Cougars (1-0).

Houston struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jake Stewart drew a lead-off walk. Isa Garcia’s single to left field advanced Stewart to third. Lincoln’s single to right center plated Stewart for the first run and moved Garcia to third. Matt Weston's sac fly to left scored Garcia.

The Cougars made it 3-0 in the bottom half of the fourth inning when Mark McGonigle scored off a sac fly to right field by Stewart.

Sophomore center fielder Phillip Allen started the fourth inning by reaching on a Cougar error. A walk by Voyles moved Allen to second and a wild pitch moved him to third. Todesco plated Allen with a sac fly to center field.

The Cougars pushed their lead to 4-1 in the sixth inning. Josh Stirneman led off the inning with a double to right and came home on a sac hit by McGonigle.

The Roadrunners scored four runs to take a 5-4 lead with the help of two Houston errors in the eighth inning.

UTSA added two runs in the top half of the ninth. Allen led off the inning with a walk and came around to score off Voyles’ double ripped down the left line. Todesco plated the seventh run for UTSA with his second RBI of the game.

Houston knotted the game at 7-all with a two-run homer by Bryan Tully to right field. Tully’s home run came on a 3-2 count with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Roadrunners jumped on the Cougars with three runs in the top of the tenth inning. James Keithley and Allen drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Voyles’ single scored Keithley, followed by Todesco's third RBI of the game bringing Allen home. Michael Rockett scored the third run of the inning, to give UTSA a 10-7 lead.

An RBI single by Stewart scored McGonigle to start the UH rally in the 10th. A Garcia single put runners at first and third with two outs for Lincoln's walk-off shot.

Clint Corrigan (1-0) earned the win for Houston, while Junior Blake Brannon was credited with the loss (0-1).

UTSA returns to San Antonio for its home opener against Utah this Friday, Feb. 10, at Wolff Stadium. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
