EDINBURG – The UTSA men's tennis team rebounded from back-to-back losses with a 5-2 win over UTRGV on Sunday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
"I'm extremely proud of the guys today," UTSA head coach Rodrigo da Silva said. "It was a hostile environment. Our guys were extremely focused in doubles play. It all started there. Singles was super competitive and they handled the situation perfectly. We played tough today."
The Roadrunners (2-4) picked up their first two doubles wins in the match, as the pairings at Nos. 2 and 3 earned victories.
Gabriel Bugiga and Kai Breitbach teamed up at the third position to notch a 6-3 win. Joao Ceolin and Igor Cantanhede then followed at the second spot with a 6-2 win to clinch the doubles point.
UTSA's momentum carried into singles play, where the Birds picked up points in four of the six flights.
Ceolin pushed the advantage to 2-0 after he logged a 6-2, 6-2 win over Zane Kohrs at the fifth singles spot.
After UTRGV (2-3) picked up its first point of the contest at No. 4 singles, Juri Reckon tallied a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win at the second position.
UTRGV also won the third spot matchup, but Breitbach clinched the match with a come-from-behind, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 triumph at No. 1 singles.
Patrick Poestinger also earned a victory at the sixth position.
The Roadrunners will continue their road trip on Saturday, Feb. 10, with a stop at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. First serve is slated for 11 a.m.
