UTSA Sports Performance

Mission Statement

The UTSA Sports Performance Department provides athletes the means by which they can train consistently, sensibly and systematically over designated periods of time in a safe, clean and professional environment to help prevent injury and improve athletic performance.

Philosophy

The philosophy of the University of Texas at San Antonio sports performance program adheres strictly to the three proven scientific principles of adaptation.

Specificity

The transfer of a training adaptation to a gain in competition performance.

Overload

Adaptation takes place when the magnitude of training is greater than normal and is achieved by prescribing the correct number of sets, repetitions and intensity of effort. The primary focus is the muscular and energy systems’ adaptation to overload.

Periodization

Training phases must be planned so that speed, agility, power and endurance will peak during the most important competitions.
