SAN ANTONIO – It’s back to the road for the UTSA men’s tennis team (5-7), traveling to Dallas to face SMU (9-10) at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 12 at the Mustangs’ Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex. The second straight in-state road opponent, Wednesday’s match is the second of four straight outings away from the UTSA Tennis Complex.

About the Roadrunners
Winning two of their last three outings, the Roadrunners are 5-7 in the first season under Sasha Gozun. UTSA is fresh off a cross-town win at UIW, 6-1, defeating the Cardinals for the sixth consecutive time. Senior Danijal Muminovic continues to be the wins leader for the Roadrunners, coming into the week at 6-3, while Oskar Grzegorzewski and Tiago Torres each have netted a 5-2 record. Torres checks in at 100th in the latest ITA singles rankings. Torres pairs with classmate Miguel Alonso as the 63rd-ranked doubles tandem, sporting a 3-0 record for the team’s best win percentage. Pairs of Ben Chetewy Ungar and Grzegorzewski as well as Muminovic and Enzo Vargas also have three wins each.
About the SMU Mustangs
In the seventh season under Grant Chen, the Mustangs are 9-10, coming off a 17-11 season in 2023-24 and earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. Since jumping into ACC play on Feb. 28, the Mustangs have dropped four consecutive matches. Playing on four different courts this season, freshman Georgi Georgiev is pacing SMU in wins with a 10-5 record, while fellow rookie Ofek Shimanov is 9-5 and No. 115 Jerry Barton is 8-6. In doubles play, the Mustangs have worked out 15 different combinations this season – topping the win counts are Trevor Svajda and Louis Cloud at 5-2, as well as Vikas Deo and Xavier Calvelo at 5-5.
The Roadrunners and Mustangs meet for the 12th time in the series, with SMU leading 9-2 overall. The bulk of matches have been played in Dallas and SMU is 8-2 against the Roadrunners at home. The last meeting was an early-season matchup on Feb. 12, 2023 in Dallas. After falling to SMU 4-1, the 2023 Roadrunners reeled off an NCAA-high 14-match win streak and reached as high as a program-best 34th in the national rankings.

The Roadrunners will head to the Mountain Time Zone, taking on a pair of matches in Albuquerque with Northern Arizona on Saturday, March 22, followed up with a Sunday, March 23 meeting with host New Mexico. The following week will see UTSA back at home with an Abilene Christian match on the March 29 schedule.
