Roadrunners in fourth after first day of C-USA Championship

DADE CITY, Fla. — The No. 49-ranked UTSA women's golf team is in a tie for fourth after the opening day of the Conference USA Championship, which teed off Monday at La Jovita Golf & Country Club (par 72/6,267 yards).
 
On a day that saw a pair of lightning delays totaling approximately two hours, the 11-team field reached the midway point of the 54-hole tournament before the second round was suspended at 5 p.m. CT. Originally scheduled for 18 holes on each of the three days, officials on Sunday decided to start the second round on Monday afternoon. Play will resume at 9 a.m. CT Tuesday with the final round slated for Wednesday.
 
The two-time defending champion Roadrunners opened the tournament with a 7-over-par 295 on the strength of a 1-under 71 by Camryn Carreon. The sophomore from San Antonio wrote down four birdies on her first-round scorecard, including three on a four-hole stretch of Nos. 8-11.
 
Scores in the second round are unofficial but UTSA is 5-over in the second round and has moved up one spot in the team standings into a tie with Southern Miss for fourth at 12-over. Those two teams are two shots ahead of FIU and three in front of Old Dominion, while trailing third-place Middle Tennessee by 10.
 
Individually, Hannah Holzmann has a share of 15th at 2-over. The junior from San Antonio opened with a 74 and currently is even through nine holes in her second round. She has birdied the 333-yard, par-4 third hole in both rounds.
 
Meanwhile, Carreon and Nicole Polivchak are part of a seven-way tie for 20th at 3-over. Carreon is 4-over through nine in the second round, while Polivchak is even through eight holes after firing a 75 in the morning round.
 
Ana Gonzalez is one shot behind that UTSA duo in a tie for 27th at 4-over. The defending individual champion registered three birdies in her opening round of 75 and is currently 1-over through eight in the second 18.
 
Katia Mexsen rounds out the Roadrunners lineup in a tie for 50th (+11).
 
WKU sits atop the leaderboard at 9-under, followed by 33rd-ranked North Texas (-3).
 
Megan Clarke of WKU and Audrey Tan of North Texas are tied for the individual lead at 6-under.
