Gonzalez named Conference USA Women's Golfer of the Week

IRVING — UTSA freshman Ana Gonzalez has been named Conference USA Women's Golfer of the Week for her record-setting performance at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship, the league office announced Wednesday.

Gonzalez finished as runner-up after posting the lowest 54-hole scorecard in program history with an 8-under-par 205, which is the second-best score versus par behind Fabiola Arriaga's 9-under 207 at the 2014 Conference USA Championship.

The Monterrey, Mexico, native dipped under par in all three rounds, including breaking 70 twice. After turning in a 70 in her opening round, she fired a season-best 67 followed by a 68 in the final round. Gonzalez wrote down 15 birdies during the event, the second-highest tally in the 86-player field, and finished just one shot behind individual winner Emilia Migliaccio of Wake Forest. She owns a 70.5 stroke average through the first two events of her college career.

Behind Gonzalez, the Roadrunners finished in a tie for fourth with BYU and Maryland at 10-over 862 in field that included six nationally ranked teams.

UTSA will be back in action on Oct. 6-8 at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in Littleton, Colo.
