HOUSTON ? Freshman right fielder Tyler Carpenter’s game-winning double in the top of the 12th inning propelled UTSA to an 11-9 win at Houston on Wednesday night at Cougar Field. It was the Roadrunners' (33-12) eighth victory in a row and 18th in their last 21 contests overall.
Senior first baseman TrentLockwood drew a one-out walk to get things started in the final frame and then stole second. After senior left fielder PhillipAllen walked, Carpenter followed with his game-winning two-bagger that gave UTSA the lead for good.
Sophomore closer Zach Calhoon, who allowed an unearned run on just one hit in a career-high five innings, recorded his third win of the season. Calhoon walked a pair and fanned four.
Junior left fielder Aaron Powell paced the Roadrunners offense by going 3-for-4, while freshman second baseman Ryan Huston tallied a team-high four RBIs, including a three-run homer in the second, his sixth of the season.
UTSA jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top second.
Powell was hit by a pitch to start the inning, sophomore third baseman Ryan Rummel followed with a single and Hutson then belted a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall.
Houston (27-18) cut the deficit to one in the bottom frame with a pair of tallies.
Matt Murphy began the inning with a walk. A Felix Fanaselle base hit and fielder’s choice by Zak Presley put runners at the corners with one out. Chris Wallace plated Murphy with a sacrifice fly and Jake Stewart brought home the Cougars' second run with a base hit to right two batters later.
The Cougars grabbed their first lead of the night when they scored five runs in the third. Stewart’s two-run homer over to left highlighted the frame.
The Roadrunners responded with a pair of runs in the fourth to pull within two at 7-5.
Back-to-back singles by senior catcher Zach Etheredge and Rummel and a walk to junior shortstop James Keithley loaded the bases with two outs. Palincsar then connected on a single to bring home Etheredge and Rummel.
UTSA added two more runs in the seventh to tie the game at seven.
Powell led off the stanza with a single to right and advanced to third on a throwing error by the pitcher. A fielding error by Bryan Pounds allowed Powell to score and a Hutson base knock to left scored Carpenter, who reached on a fielder's choice.
The Roadrunners regained the lead one inning later with two runs. Rockett highlighted the frame with his seventh home run of the season.
However, Houston answered with a pair of runs in its half of the inning to knot the contest at nine.
The Roadrunners return to Southland Conference action this weekend with a three-game series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. First pitch in Friday's opener is slated for 6:30 p.m. at Fairgrounds Field in Robstown.
