Hennigan, Northwestern State stop Roadrunners, 5-1, on Saturday

· Box score

SAN ANTONIO – Northwestern State starter Heath Hennigan fired a complete-game five-hitter and the Demons ended UTSA’s seven-game home winning streak with a 5-1 victory on Saturday at Roadrunner Field.

UTSA, which lost its first Southland Conference home contest of the season, dropped to 20-15 overall and 12-2 in league play. The Demons improved to 16-20 and 6-7 in SLC play.

Hennigan (2-1) retired the first six Roadrunners he faced and never looked back. The 6-foot-5 right-hander allowed just one run, walked four and struck out a career-high 10. He retired the side in order in five frames and eight of his punchouts were swinging.

Jared Hollis’ two-out triple with the bases loaded in the second gave Hennigan all he would need on a day in which the wind was blowing in from center field at 25-30 miles per hour.

Northwestern State added insurance runs in the fourth and eighth innings, but the Roadrunners left the bases loaded two times and stranded a total of eight runners on the day.

UTSA got on the board in the sixth on junior Trent Lockwood’s RBI single with two down that plated sophomore James Keithley, but that was all the offense it could muster.

Junior right-hander Bradley Chovanec (2-4) lost his second consecutive decision after allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits in 7.1 innings. Chovanec walked three and struck out one.

The series concludes at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Senior righty Blake Brannon (2-4, 7.90 ERA) will square off against southpaw Fraser Robinson (3-3, 6.00).
