Long ball gives UTSA a 6-3 win over Northwestern State

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - UTSA’s baseball team took full advantage of windy conditions, going deep three times in a 6-3 victory over the Northwestern State Demons Saturday afternoon in Southland Conference action at Roadrunner Field.

UTSA (15-9, 3-2 Southland) was led from the plate by J.R. Voyles (right), who went two-for-four with a home run and two RBI, and Lee Todesco, who went two-for-three and had a home run as well. Michael McKennon also came up big, putting the game out of reach with a two-run homer in the fifth inning.

Josh Ruffin (4-1) got the win for UTSA, pitching six and a third innings and working his way out of trouble several times. Dereck Cloeren (1-2) picked up the loss for Northwestern State (12-13, 1-7 SLC). Noah Tritz pitched the ninth and got his fifth save for the Roadrunners.

The wind played a big part in the outcome, as several of UTSA’s early runs were due in part to wind-aided plays. J.R. Voyles’ homer in the first inning was barely pushed over the left field wall, while in the second inning, a bloop double by Todesco later led to a run.

Northwestern State, on the other hand, could not capitalize on opportunities, stranding 11 runners, while UTSA only left one man on base in the game. The Demons, an early favorite to win the conference, have continued to struggle in the SLC and remain in last place with the loss.

For UTSA, Voyles’ homer was his fourth on the year, while Todesco’s was his third. McKennon’s was his fifth for the season.

Following up a pair of wins, UTSA will try for the series sweep on Sunday. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
