PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Paced by a 3-under-par scorecard from Logan Zurn, UTSA moved up the leaderboard on the final day of The Hayt, which wrapped up Monday at Sawgrass Country Club (par 72/7,092 yards).
Zurn’s 69 — which matched his season-best round — helped the Roadrunners post a 3-over 291 in the final round to move past Liberty into 13th place in the team standings. UTSA finished with an 887 (307-289-291) for the 54-hole event, edging the Flames by one shot and besting Navy by 31 strokes. The Roadrunners ended up only one shot behind No. 37 Charlotte and just five shy of 10th-place and 26th-ranked Northwestern in the field that included 10 nationally ranked teams.
Individually, Zurn finished as part of an 11-way tie for 22nd place at 2-over 218 (75-74-69). Starting the day on No. 14, the junior logged seven straight pars before settling for a bogey on No. 3. Following three more pars, Zurn recorded back-to-back birdies with a three on the 423-yard seventh and a four on the 544-yard eighth. The Grapevine, Texas, native then had a pair of pars followed by birdies on the 566-yard, par-5 11th and on the 167-yard, par-3 12th before closing with his 13th par of the day. He finished the event with 12 birdies while turning in his third 3-under-par round of his debut campaign with UTSA.
Logan Vargas and Jack Wehman posted identical scores to end up in a tie for 54th at 8-over 224 (79-72-73).
Vargas, a junior from Lubbock, registered a team-high six birdies in a final-round 73. He circled his number on three of his first six holes to get to 2-under for the day. He then bounced back from a pair of bogeys with a birdie on the 419-yard, par-4 fifth before tacking on two more birdies down the stretch en route to matching Zurn with a team-best 12 for the tournament.
Wehman also posted a 1-over 73 on Monday on the strength of five birdies. The Austin native had three of those birdies on a six-hole stretch on the front nine, where he shot a 1-under 35. He finished with nine birdies and played the par fives at 4-under par for the event.
Walker Franklin grabbed a share of 60th with a 226. After opening with a 74-76—150, the senior out of Colorado carded another 76 that was highlighted by a trio of his seven birdies during the tournament.
Kaelen Dulany ended up in a tie for 75th with a 231 (79-71-81).
No. 4 Texas captured the team title with an 18-under 846 behind individual medalist Luke Potter’s 10-under 206 (71-66-69). The Longhorns were followed by No. 28 Duke (-11), No. 18 Alabama (-6), No. 8 North Carolina (-1) and No. 9 Virginia (E) in the top five.
The Roadrunners will return to action next Monday-Tuesday, March 17-18, when they travel to the Golf Club of Houston to compete in the All-America Intercollegiate.
