UTSA Cross Country completes first AAC Championship

Greenville, N.C. — The UTSA cross country teams completed its first American Athletic Conference Championship meet on Saturday morning at Lake Kristi in Greenville, N.C.

The men’s team finished in 10th place with 272 points. Colton Stunkard led the way as he crossed the finish line in 25th place and beat his previous personal record by over 40 seconds (23:50.1) in the 8,000-meter race. Caden Cunningham came in 54th place with a time of 24:58.2. Landon Blankenship finished in 63rd place with a personal-record time of 25:13.4, while Adrian Orozco followed shortly in 67thplace and another personal best of 25:32.8.

Gabe Hernandez exceeded his previous best by nearly one minute, placing 76th with a time of 25:56.9. Shortly after, OJ Ruiz was the final Roadrunner to score at 78th place in 26:06.7. Idol Ramon ended the race in 26:54.8 for 86thplace.

The women’s team ended in 12th place with 292 points. For the fourth time this season, freshman Melody Espinoza led the Roadrunners as she placed 21st and beat her previous best by three seconds (21:39.4). Marissa Espinoza finished in 56th place with a time of 22:50.2. Jadelyn Malesich crossed the finish line in 64th place with a time of 23:00.2.

Brooke Veltman finished in 23:14.6 to place 75th. Taylor Cochran was the final Roadrunner to score, placing 88th with a time of 23:48.3, while Chante Dixon followed after with 89th place and a time of 23:51.0.

Three more Roadrunners rounded out the team of nine runners. Sidney Bravo placed 91st with a time of 23:52.1. Itzel Rojo placed 94th with a time of 24:06.8. Luzaan de Wit placed 99th with a time of 24:21.4.

Tulsa’s men’s squad extended its conference championship streak to 10 straight seasons, while Tulane topped the women’s team leaderboard for the first time.

The Roadrunners will head to Fayetteville, Ark., to compete in the NCAA South Central Regional, hosted by the Arkansas Razorbacks at Agri Park on Friday, November 10.
