Roadrunners wrap up NCAA Preliminary Round action on Saturday

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Three members of the UTSA women's track & field team were in action on Saturday on the final day of the NCAA West Preliminary at Hornet Stadium.

Oreoluwa Adamson, Sigrid Kleive and Alanah Yukich all were seeking a top-12 finish to earn a berth in the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which will be held June 7-10 in Austin, Texas.

Yukich registered the top finish of the day by a Roadrunner, placing 14th in the quarterfinal round of the 400-meter hurdles. The two-time conference champion clocked a season-best time of 57.30 seconds to finish fifth in her heat, which was won by Olympian Britton Wilson of Arkansas in 53.71., the top time of the event. In fact, the top five finishers in her heat and 15 hurdlers overall broke 58 seconds. Yukich was only 0.18 seconds shy of extending her season, as Utah's Dinedye Denis grabbed the final qualifying spot with a 57.12 clocking out of heat three.

Kleive was the first Roadrunner in action on the final day of the meet. The Aalesund, Norway, native finished in a tie for 27th in the high jump with a clearance of 1.72 meters (5-7.75). She sailed over the bar on her opening height of 1.67m (5-5.75) on the first attempt. She then needed only two tries to clear 1.72m before bowing out on the next height, 1.77m (5-9.75).

Meanwhile, Adamson already is qualified for the national meet in the long jump by virtue of her seventh-place showing on Thursday. The junior from London, England, was looking to advance in the triple jump, as well, but her top mark of 12.53m (41-1.5) placed her 34th in the field of 48. After opening with a 12.34m (40-6) measurement, the Conference USA gold medalist skipped to her top mark of the day on her second trip down the runway before fouling on her third attempt.

Four Roadrunners will continue their NCAA postseason run in two weeks when they make the short trip to Austin for the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Jack Turner and Joel McFarlane will compete in the decathlon on June 7-8, Bashiru Abdullahi will race in the 110m hurdles semifinals on June 7 and Adamson is slated for the long jump final on June 8.
