UTSA men register runner-up finish at C-USA Outdoor Championships

DENTON, Texas — Bolstered by five gold medals, including three collected on Sunday, the UTSA men finished second at the Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at UNT Track & Field Stadium.

The Roadrunners boasted a pair of wins entering the final day of the four-day meet, as Jack Turner broke meet and school records with 8,011 points to win the decathlon, while Christiaan Le Roux completed the 2023 sweep of the C-USA long jump titles. On Sunday, Dylan James claimed top honors in the triple jump, Mike Roth crossed first in the 400 meters and the 4x100m relay team of Logan Masters, Brice Chabot, Trevion McCalla and Dennis Phillips ran away with the win, giving the program 79 all-time conference outdoor gold medals, including 25 as a member of C-USA.

UTSA totaled 11 podium finishes and scored 150.5 points, the most since tallying 165 in winning the 2015 team title. The Roadrunners were second behind Charlotte (184) and 30 points ahead of Rice (120.5), 60.5 in front of North Texas (90) and 62.5 better than UTEP (88) in the nine-team field. The runner-up showing marked the program's 10th top-three showing in the last 13 league outdoor meets.

The Roadrunners entered Sunday in third place with 48.5 points, trailing only Rice (92.5) and Charlotte (72).

UTSA put up a big point total in one of the first events of the day, scoring 24 in the triple jump behind five top-eight finishes. Dylan James scored his first conference gold as a Roadrunners by skipping to a mark of 15.49 meters (50-10) on his third attempt to take of first place for good. Jacob Jenkins, who was leading after two rounds with a 15.20m (49-10.5) measurement, secured silver with a 15.31m (50-2.75) leap in the fifth round. Gabriel Binion and Christiaan Le Roux — who won the long jump on Saturday — placed sixth (15.09m/49-6.25) and seventh (14.28m (46-10.25), respectively, while defending champion Jemuel Miller was eighth (14.19m/46-6.75).

The Roadrunners tacked on 15 points in the shot put, as Jabari Bennett took home the silver medal with a mark of 17.63m (57-2.75), while Michael Campbell and Paul Bouey finished fifth (17.11m/56-1.75) and sixth (16.79m (55-10), respectively.

UTSA opened the action on the track in thrilling fashion, cruising to gold in the 4x1. The foursome of Masters, Chabot, McCalla and Phillips sped to a time of 39.59 seconds to finish well ahead of Louisiana Tech (40.02), notching the program's first league victory in the event since 2008 and matching the second-fastest time in program history in the process.

Bashiru Abdullahi collected his sixth career C-USA medal in the 110m hurdles, crossing second with a 13.71 clocking to add eight more points to UTSA's tally.

Roth was next on the oval, and the sophomore from Canada successfully completed the sweep of this year's C-USA 400m crowns after clocking a 46.80 to place ahead of UTEPs' Joshua Hill (47.18). Masters finished sixth in 47.74 to give the Roadrunners 13 points in the race.

A trio of Roadrunners contributed 11 points in the 100m, as Phillips and McCalla finished fourth (10.41) and fifth (10.42) with Chabot crossing in seventh (10.46).

Gabriel Green finished fourth in the 400m hurdles with a 53.72 clocking to add five more points before the sprinting trio pushed UTSA's total to 150.5 to Charlotte's 151 after the 200m. Chabot registered a runner-up time of 20.95 a day after breaking the school record with a 20.44 clocking, while Phillips and McCalla placed fourth (21.19) and sixth (21.36), respectively.

However, Charlotte scored 16 points in the next race — the 5,000m — to clinch the team title.

The Roadrunners will return to action at the NCAA West Preliminary Round on May 24-27 in Sacramento, California.
