Adamson, Yukich lead UTSA women third at C-USA Outdoor Championships

DENTON, Texas — Led by 20-point performances from Oreoluwa Adamson and Alanah Yukich, the UTSA women finished third at the Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which wrapped up Sunday at UNT Track & Field Stadium.

Adamson swept the long and triple jump crowns, while Yukich defended her title in the 400-meter hurdles, claimed runner-up honors in the 100m hurdles and anchored the 4x400m relay to a silver medal.

That duo helped the Roadrunners total nine podium finishes and score 111 points for a third-place showing behind Rice (187) and Charlotte (146.5). UTSA ended up 16 points ahead of UTEP (95) and 41 in front of Middle Tennessee in the 11-team race while notching its third straight and 16th all-time top-four finish at a league outdoor meet.

A day after winning the long jump crown to complete the sweep of the 2023 C-USA gold medals in that event, Adamson narrowly bested the field in the triple jump for her second victory of the weekend. The London, England, native skipped to a mark of 12.69 meters (41-7.75) to finish just one centimeter ahead of Rice's Savannah Simms, who posted a 12.68m (41-7.25) measurement. Adamson opened with a 12.63m (41-5.25) to take control of first place through round one before posting her top jump of the day on her third trip down the runway. She recorded marks of 12.45m (40-10.25), 12.58m (41-3.25) and 12.62m (41-5) in the finals en route to collecting her sixth career league medal.

Yukich made a trio of appearances on the podium on the final day of the four-day meet. The Perth, Australia, native successfully defended her 400m hurdles title by clocking a time of 57.55 seconds to finish ahead of UTEP's Loubna Benhadja (58.17). It marked her third C-USA medal in the event after winning last year in 57.93 and finishing second in 2021 with a personal best 57.00.

With their three wins this year, the Roadrunners now have 70 gold medals at conference outdoor meets.

Earlier in the afternoon, Yukich raced to a 13.65 clocking to secure the silver medal in the 100m hurdles behind only UTEP's Marissa Simpson (13.27).

Yukich later returned to the track for the final race and anchored the 4x4 to a runner-up finish. She joined Ibiso David-West, Marie Duvigneau and Geraldy Barron to clock a time of 3:41.50 for second place behind UTEP (3:38.87), giving her 10 career medals in C-USA meets.

Entering the day in third place with 36 points behind Rice (55) and Charlotte (50), Zoe Shanklin started the final day by scratching for a point in the shot put, placing eighth with a mark of 14.15m (46-5.25).

UTSA added six points in the javelin after Marilis Remmel improved her own school record with a throw of 48.82m (160-2) to finish fifth, while Sigrid Kleive — who grabbed bronze in the heptathlon on Friday — placed seventh with a toss of 44.34m (145-5).

Kleive, a native of Norway, added a fifth-place clearance of 1.65m (5-5) in the high jump for four more points toward UTSA's team total.

The Roadrunners opened the track events with a bronze medal in the 4x100m relay. The quartet of David-West, Thennelle Williams, Barron and Lauren Roy passed the baton around the oval in 45.29 seconds, the second-fastest time in program history.

Yukich and Ayumi Kobayashi combined for 13 points in the 100m hurdles, as the latter finished fourth with a 14.00 clocking.

Williams added a sixth-place showing in the 100m after clocking an 11.59 and Mackenzie Grimes placed eighth in the 400m hurdles (1:03.77) before Roy and Williams finished fifth (24.07) and seventh (25.75), respectively, in the 200m.

The Roadrunners will return to action at the NCAA West Preliminary Round on May 24-27 in Sacramento, California.
