Adamson, Le Roux sweep long jump crowns on Saturday at C-USA Outdoor

DENTON, Texas — UTSA All-Americans Oreoluwa Adamson and Christiaan Le Roux swept the long jump crowns to highlight Saturday action for the Roadrunners at the Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at UNT Track & Field Stadium.

Adamson and Le Roux both led 1-2 UTSA finishes in the long jump and completed sweeps of this year's indoor and outdoor league titles in the process, while Ingeborg Gruenwald and Dylan James earned the silver medals to help the Roadrunners on the third day of the four-day meet.

Adamson led wire to wire in the women's long jump competition after opening with a mark of 6.16 meters (20-2.5) before recording her best jump of the day, a 6.22m (20-5) leap on her second trip down the runway. The London, England, native also measured 6.00m (19-8.25) on her fourth attempt and 6.19m (20-3.75) on her sixth and final try to secure her fifth career conference medal.

Le Roux collected his fourth career top-three conference finish with a mark of 7.63m (25-0.5), leading a group of Roadrunners that placed five in the top eight finishers, scoring 26 points in the event. The South African opened with a 7.18m (23-6.75) measurement to put himself in second place through round one before leaping to the top of the field with a 7.34m (24-1) effort on his second try. He then registered his top jump of the day before also posting marks of 7.49m (24-7), 7.48m (24-6.5) and 7.46m (24-5.75) in the final.

Gruenwald picked up her seventh career league medal with the silver in the women's long jump to help UTSA tally 18 points in the event. The Salzburg, Austria, native bounced back from a foul on her first attempt with a 6.09m (19-11.75) mark to earn a spot in the final. The two-time C-USA champion measured 5.82m (19-1.25), 6.06m (19-10.75) and 5.94m (19-6) on her final three tries.

James earned the silver in the men's long jump in dramatic fashion. The transfer from Arizona State was sitting in seventh place through the first three attempts with a top measurement of 7.17m (23-6.25). He then moved into third with a 7.25m (23-9.5) leap in round four and remained just outside the top three through the fifth round before breaking the sand at 7.49m (24-7) on his final try to move into the runner-up position.

Gabriel Binion and Jacob Jenkins finished fifth (7.29m/23-11) and sixth (7.27m/23-10.25), respectively, while Jack Turner took eighth (6.96m/22-10) a day after breaking the meet and school records in the decathlon.

Headlined by Brice Chabot's school record-setting race in the 200 meters, the Roadrunners registered 19 qualifiers for Sunday's finals on the track, 10 on the men's side and nine for the women.

On a windy afternoon, Chabot sped to a wind-legal time of 20.44 seconds to win his preliminary heat of the 200m and eclipse the previous school standard of 20.56 set by Dionte Robinson in 2015. The Smithville, Texas, native paced a trio of Roadrunners that advanced in the deuce, as Dennis Phillips clocked a wind-aided 20.78 and Trevion McCalla turned in a 20.92 for the fifth- and sixth-fastest times of the day.

Phillips led the group in the 100m earlier in the day, speeding to a 10.20 clocking that was aided by a 3.0 meters-per-second tailwind to cross first in his heat. McCalla and Chabot each clocked windy times of 10.27 to also stay advance.

Defending champion and meet record holder Bashiru Abdullahi moved on in the men's 110m hurdles, cruising to a wind-aided 13.74 for first place in his heat, while Gabriel Green also was a heat winner with a 53.59 clocking in the 400m hurdles.

Mike Roth kept his hopes alive for a sweep of the C-USA 400m titles this year, circling in 48.87 to win his preliminary heat, while Logan Masters also qualified for the final with a 47.54 clocking.

Thennelle Williams and Alanah Yukich each qualified for a pair of running finals to lead the women.

Williams, the 2022 C-USA Freshman of the Meet, sped to a wind-illegal time of 11.17 behind a 5.2 meters-per-second tailwind to advance in the 100m. The sophomore from Jamaica also made it through in the 200m with a 23.56 clocking.

Yukich, the defending 400m hurdles champion, stayed alive in both hurdle events. The senior from Perth, Australia, clocked a wind-aided 13.60 to comfortably win her heat of the 100m hurdles before returning to the oval to cruise to the best preliminary time of the day, a 59.19 in the 400m hurdles.

A pair of Roadrunners stayed alive in the 400m, as Marie Duvigneau won her heat with a 56.02 clocking just ahead of Geraldy Barron's 57.03.

Lauren Roy crossed first in her heat of the 200m with a 23.54 to qualify for Sunday's final, while Ayumi Kobayashi and Mackenzie Grimes advanced in the 100m hurdles (13.98) and 400m hurdles (1:03.45), respectively.

In other finals action, Binion cleared 2.01m (6-7) in the men's high jump to finish fifth, Isabella Simonelli took seventh in the women's discus with a throw of 46.32m (151-11) and Landon Blankenship placed eighth in the men's 3,000m steeplechase with a 9:35.09 clocking.

The meet will conclude on Sunday with field events beginning at 10 a.m. and running events at 3 p.m.
