Kleive, Yukich shine on Friday at Texas Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas — Sigrid Kleive won the women's javelin throw and Alanah Yukich was the top collegiate finisher in the women's 400-meter hurdles to headline Friday action for the UTSA track & field teams at the Texas Invitational.

Kleive and Yukich led the way on an abbreviated day of events that were moved up to the afternoon to avoid forecasted inclement weather for the Austin area on Friday evening. A total of 14 Roadrunners finished in the top eight collegians on the first day of the two-day meet, which is the Roadrunners' final tune-up for the Conference USA Outdoor Championships next month.

Kleive opened the javelin competition by unleashing a throw of 46.36 meters (152-1) which put her in first place for good. She had two additional measured attempts of 42.85m (140-7) and 41.17m (135-1) while registering a comfortable win ahead of Stephen F. Austin's Montana Piper, who was second with a toss of 42.40m (139-1). The victory was the fifth top-two finish of the Norwegian's junior campaign and her mark was just shy of her personal best of 46.58m (152-10) posted last week in a runner-up showing at the J Fred Duckett Twilight.

Meanwhile, Yukich was second overall and first among collegians in the 400m hurdles. Running in lane eight in the first of two heats, the Australian clocked a time of 57.74 seconds to finish only behind Shiann Salmon, who posted a 55.83 while competing for adidas. The defending C-USA champion now has three victories in the event and has dipped below 58 seconds three times this season.

Back in the field events, a pair of UTSA All-Americans placed in the top four collegians in the women's long jump. Ingeborg Gruenwald was fourth overall and third among collegiate jumpers with a wind-illegal leap of 6.11m (20-0.5), while Oreoluwa Adamson was one place behind her with a windy mark of 6.03m (19-9.5).

For the men, Joel McFarlane logged a fourth-place finish in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 52.68m (172-10). That effort eclipsed The Scotland native's previous PB of 51.31m (168-4) registered at the 2021 Roadrunner Invitational.

On the track, Dennis Phillips sped to a time of 20.82 to finish eighth overall and sixth among collegians in the 200m, while Brice Chabot was one spot behind him with a 20.87 clocking.

In the women's 200m, Thennelle Williams stopped the clock in a wind-aided time of 23.47 for fifth among collegians and Lauren Roy was seventh in 23.57.

In other Friday action, Gabriel Binion finished eighth overall and seventh among collegians with a leap of 7.34m (24-1) with Jacob Jenkins one place behind after jumping 7.33m (24-0.75). Mackenzie Grimes took sixth in the women's 400m hurdles in 1:04.32, Maren Wilms was seventh in the women's javelin (27.87m/91-5) and Gabriel Green was eighth among collegians in the men's 400m hurdles (56.45)

Saturday's action will start with field events at 9:30 a.m., while the first race is slated for 2:20 p.m.
