UTSA caps regular season with 5-2 win over Houston

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women's tennis team ended its regular season with a 5-2 victory over Houston on Senior Day at the UTSA Tennis Center in San Antonio. 
 
Prior to the match, the Roadrunners recognized senior Keegan McCain for Senior Day. McCain joined the Roadrunners in 2019 and has put up winning records in both doubles (13-8) and singles (11-10) play in her four-year career. Off the court, she has excelled in the classroom, earning multiple awards including ITA Scholar-Athlete twice, C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll three times and Commissioner's Academic Medal once. The Austin, Texas, native also took part in the NCAA Career in Sports Forum in 2022, representing UTSA and the Conference USA. She is graduating in May with her Bachelor's in Business Administration.
 
After a loss at the second court to start doubles play, the other two courts battled to win the doubles point for the Roadrunners. Aleksandra Zlatarova and Magda Tuells took a 6-4 victory at the first court over Houston's Laura Slisane/Sophie Schouten. 
 
Then, the pair of Stanislava Bobrovnikova and Adeliya Mukhutdinova took a 6-3 win over the Cougars' duo of Azul Pedemonti and Sonya Kovalenko to secure an early 1-0 lead for UTSA.
 
The Cougars tied it up at 1-1 as Mukhutdinova fell to Schouten by set scores of 6-2 and 6-3 at the fifth court.
 
The Roadrunners won the next three points to secure the match victory. At the second court, Weir defeated Maria Dzemeshkevich by sets of 6-3 and 6-4 to give the Roadrunners a 2-1 advantage.
 
Fatima Gutierrez battled through three sets with Pedemonti at the No. 3 spot. Gutierrez won the first set by 6-3, before falling in the second set by 6-2, which forced a third set. The freshman then completed the third court win with a 6-4 third set win to extend UTSA's lead to 3-1.
 
Zlatarova clinched the winning fourth point at the top spot, defeating Slisane in a three-set fight. After winning the first set by 6-3, Zlatarova dropped the second set by 6-2. She fought back and won the third set by 6-1, securing the match-winning fourth point. 
 
At the sixth spot, Eva Beyebach also battled to three sets with opponent Blanca Cortijo Parreno. Beyebach took the first set by 6-4, before falling by 6-3 in the second one. She dominated the final set by 6-0 to give the Roadrunners a 5-1 advantage.
 
Tuells dropped the fifth spot by set scores of 4-6, 7-6 and 8-10 to Gabriela Cortes to give the Cougars their second point. UTSA secured the 5-2 victory to end the regular season and celebrate Senior Day.
 
UTSA's record improves to 13-9 overall, while Houston falls to 11-8.   
 
UP NEXT: The Roadrunners will head to Denton, Texas, for the Conference USA Championships on April 20-23. The seeding and bracket for the tournament will be announced at the conclusion of the regular season.
