Carreon grabs share of individual lead through 36 holes of Trinity Forest Invitational

DALLAS — Camryn Carreon has a share of the individual lead and the UTSA women's golf team is in 10th place through 36 holes of the Trinity Forest Invitational, which teed off on Monday at Trinity Forest Golf Club (par 72/6,464 yards).

Carreon carded a 7-under-par 137 on the opening day of the 54-hole tournament and the San Antonio native is tied for first place with Tulane's Carla Bernat with the final round waiting on Tuesday. The senior opened with a 4-under 68 that featured five birdies, including three as part of a 3-under 33 on the front side. Carreon, who became the first Roadrunner to advance past an NCAA Regional last May, wrote down six birdies on her afternoon scorecard with four of those circled numbers helping her register a 33 on the back nine en route to a 3-under 69.

Carreon has played the par fives at an event-best 6-under par and her 11 birdies are tied for the top total in the field. Her 7-under 137 equals the second-best 36-hole total in program history, as she enters the final round with a two-shot lead ahead of Houston's Moa Svedenskiold, who is ranked 75th nationally.

Behind Carreon's day, the Roadrunners are in 10th at 8-over 584. UTSA opened with a 300 but bounced back in a big way with a 16-shot improvement for the second round, firing a 4-under 284 in building a six-shot cushion ahead of 11th-place Texas State in the 15-team field. The Roadrunners are only one stroke behind Cal Poly and three back of a tie for seventh between No. 42 Tulsa and Dallas Baptist in the race led by 31st-ranked and host SMU (-12).

Olivia Williams matched Carreon in round two with a 3-under 69 on the strength of four birdies, including three that helped her post a 33 on the back. The freshman from England opened with a 75 and currently is tied for 21st at even-par 144.

Morgan Ellison has a share of 51st at 6-over 150. The sophomore from Georgia rebounded from a 78 in the morning with an even-par 72 that was headlined by three birdies.

Hunter Nugent (81-74—155) and Lauren Rios (79-76—155) round out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 72nd.

The final round is slated for an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.
