Roadrunners claim seven wins on Saturday at Longhorn Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas — The UTSA track & field teams combined to win seven events at the Longhorn Invitational on Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

The women claimed victory in five events and the men added two triumphs to headline the Roadrunners' first meet of the outdoor season.

Marilis Remmel started the day's competition for UTSA by leading a 1-2 finish in the women's javelin throw. The junior unleashed her top throw of 46.67 meters (153-1) in the fifth round after claiming an early lead with a toss of 42.58m (139-8) in the opening round. A native of Estonia, she improved on each attempt leading into her fifth throw before closing with a 46.58 (152-10) effort.

Sigrid Kleive placed second in the javelin with a 43.76 (143-7) mark.

Ingeborg Gruenwald leaped to gold in the women's long jump. The Austrian touched the sand at a distance of 6.23m (20-5.25) on her third attempt after two fouls to open the competition.

Kleive and Remmel also saw action in the long jump, finishing fourth (5.85m (19-2.5) and fifth (5.21m (17-1.25), respectively.

The Roadrunners showed off their depth in the women's 400 meters, taking up six of the top eight finishing spots. Alanah Yukich crossed the line first and matched her personal-best time with a 54.50 clocking. Marie Duvigneau and Geraldy Barron placed second (56.07) and third (57.04), respectively, while Ibiso David-West (5th/58.74), Kaylyn Landry (7th/1:00.80) and Amanda Esparza (8th/1:00.91) also finished in the top eight.

Joy Baxter and Gabriel Green gave UTSA a sweep of the 400m hurdles.

In the men's 400m hurdles, Green clocked a 58.18 for second overall and first among collegiate runners.

Lauren Roy logged a pair of podium finishes for the women in the sprints. The newcomer from Northern Ireland was the first collegian and fourth overall finisher in the 200m with a 23.66 clocking, which makes her the program's No. 4 all-time performer. She also finished second among collegians and fifth overall in the 100m in 11.61.

Back in the field, All-American Jemuel Miller registered the top collegiate mark in the men's triple jump. The sophomore from Barbados measured 16.03m (52-7.25) to finish second overall, one spot ahead of teammate Jacob Jenkins, who placed third with a 15.77m (51-9) effort to made him the program's No. 4 all-time performer.

In the men's long jump, All-American Christiaan Le Roux and Gabriel Binion finished in the top four. Le Roux, a native of South Africa, leaped 7.60m (24-11.25) to claim runner-up honors, while Binion, a transfer from Australia, was fourth with a mark of 7.48m (24-6.5).

Fresh off his record-setting performance at the Conference USA Indoor Championships, Jack Turner posted a pair of third-place finishes on the track. The England native clocked 48.32 for third in the 400m, just ahead of teammate Noah Rhodes, who finished fourth in 48.59. Turner also crossed third in the 110m hurdles in 14.30.

In the sprints, Dennis Phillips moved into the fourth spot on UTSA's all-time performers list in the 100m after speeding to a 10.32 to finish fifth. Brice Chabot and Trevion McCalla were close behind in fourth (10.37w) and fifth (10.38), respectively.

That same trio returned to the track later in the afternoon to finish in the top seven collegians in the 200m. Chabot, a sophomore from Smithville, Texas, sped to a wind-aided 20.76 for fourth. Phillips, a junior from Little Elm, Texas, was sixth with a windy 21.09 and McCalla was right behind him with a wind-aided 21.28.

The Roadrunners will be back in action on Friday-Saturday, March 17-18, when they host the UTSA Invitational at Park West Athletics Complex. Meanwhile, Oreoluwa Adamson will represent UTSA in the women's long jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships next Friday, March 10, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
