Roadrunners register five victories on Saturday at Charles Austin Classic

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Alanah Yukich won the 400-meter hurdles and helped the 4x400m relay to victory, as the UTSA track & field teams won five events on Saturday at the Charles Austin Classic.

The Roadrunners tallied seven wins and 17 top-three finishes during the two-day meet at the Texas State Track & Field Complex, with the women claiming four gold medals and nine podium showings and the men adding three victories and eight top-three performances.

Yukich recorded her second straight triumph in the 400m hurdles by turning in a season-best time of 57.78 seconds, crossing the line more than five seconds ahead of runner-up Amber Gonzalez of Texas A&M-Kingsville (1:02.84). The reigning Conference USA champion and No. 2 performer in program history, Yukich posted the third-fastest time of her collegiate career today, trailing only a personal best 57.00 and a 57.57 that were both logged during the 2021 campaign.

Later in the afternoon, Yukich anchored the 4x4 to gold in the meet finale. The Australian teamed up with Geraldy Barron, Marie Duvigneau and Ibiso David-West to clock a time of 3:43.42 for first, comfortably ahead of Texas State's 3:46.61.

Earlier in the day, Thennelle Williams sped to a win in the women's 100m. The sophomore from Jamaica stopped the clock in 11.86 seconds to narrowly beat UIW's Jada Green (11.87) to the line.

Meanwhile, the men collected a pair of gold medals on Saturday.

Michael Paredes recorded his first individual victory as a Roadrunner by crossing first in the 1,500m. The Los Fresnos, Texas, native clocked a 4:00.72 to finish ahead of Patrick Leary (4:03.69) and teammate JD Corona (4:04.67). His time was just shy of his PB of 4:00.44 posted at the 44 Farms Team Invitational last April.

In the field, Jacob Jenkins also registered his first win as a Roadrunner. The Round Rock, Texas, native skipped to a mark of 15.00 meters (49-2.5) on his second trip down the runway to score the victory ahead of runner-up Aaron Cooper of UTRGV (14.46m).

In other Saturday action, Antony Ma clocked a personal-best time of 10.64 to claim bronze in the men's 100m and he later posted a 21.35 for fourth in the 200m, just behind Dennis Phillips, who placed third in 21.32, and ahead of Brice Chabot's 21.41 clocking.

For the women, Joy Baxter crossed third in the 400m hurdles with a career-best time of 1:03.00.

On Friday, Marilis Remmel remained undefeated in the women's javelin this season and Landon Blankenship collected his first collegiate win.

Remmel led a 1-2 UTSA finish in the javelin with her third victory in as many competitions this year. The junior from Estonia posted her top throw of 45.35m (148-9) on her third attempt of the day to place just ahead of runner-up Sigrid Kleive, who tossed the implement to a distance of 43.81m (143-8). She also won the event at the Longhorn Invitational on March 4 with a season-best throw of 46.67m (153-1) and last Friday at the UTSA Invitational (45.94m/150-9).

Blankenship paced a 1-2-3 finish for the Roadrunners in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a career-best time. The second-year distance runner from San Antonio Stevens High School coasted to a 9:34.20 clocking to cross first in the race and better his previous PB of 10:05.27 logged at last year's Alumni Muster. Idol Ramon and Gabe Hernandez finished second (9:53.22) and third (10:20.71), respectively.

The Roadrunners will travel to Austin for the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays next Wednesday-Saturday, March 29-April 1, at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
