Remmel strikes gold in javelin on Friday at UTSA Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — Marilis Remmel won the women's javelin throw to headline action for the UTSA track & field teams on Friday at the UTSA Invitational at Park West Athletics Complex. 
 
Remmel's gold-medal performance paced a total of seven top-three finishes for the Roadrunners in the throws and distance races on the opening day of their annual home meet.
 
The afternoon session featured six total throwing events and featured Remmel's win and a pair of additional podium showings. 
 
Remmel posted her top throw of the day — a 45.94m (150-9) measurement — on her third attempt to secure victory. The junior school record holder from Estonia opened with a 42.09m mark to put her in second place and followed with a 44.00m effort that kept her in runner-up position, before jumping into the lead with her longest toss. She held on to the top spot ahead of Tamara Susa of Texas A&M-Commerce, who was the runner-up with a 45.54m (149-5) throw.
 
Earlier in the day, Paul Bouey and Michael Campbell finished 2-3 in the men's shot put. Bouey, a native of Chile, measured 16.66m (54-8) on his third heave of the day to move into silver-medal position, while Campbell, a junior transfer from Connecticut, opened the competition with his top mark of 16.52m (54-2.5). 
 
Angel Robles and Jorge Ayala also placed in the top eight, finishing fifth (16.28m/53-5) and eighth (15.14m/49-8.25), respectively.
 
Campbell also finished fourth in the hammer throw with a mark of 52.44m (172-0), while Robles was sixth with a 43.73m (143-6) effort.
 
On the women's side, Zoe Shanklin placed fourth in the shot put after measuring 15.18m (49-9.75), while Sigrid Kleive claimed fourth in the javelin with a 43.37m (142-3) mark and Isabella Simonelli was seventh in the hammer with a throw of 51.75m (169-9).
 
In the men's javelin, Joel McFarlane and Justin Wright placed seventh (50.04m/164-2) and eighth (45.96m/150-9), respectively.
 
The night session featured four distance events and UTSA tallied four top-three finishes.
 
Landon Blankenship started things off with a runner-up performance in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase. The freshman from San Antonio Stevens High School clocked a time of 9:38.08 to finish close behind Kansas State's Tommy Hazen (9:22.27). Idol Ramon and Gabe Hernandez finished sixth (9:56.64) and seventh (10:26.83), respectively.
 
In the women's 5,000m, Sabrina Goains crossed in third place with an 18:30.00 clocking and Brooke Veltman was right behind her in fourth in 19:14.99.
 
The UTSA men placed four in the top eight collegiate runners in the nightcap. Caden Cunningham posted a 5k time of 15:08.69 for second place with Spencer Herbstritt close behind in third with a 15:14.35 clocking. Meanwhile, O.J. Ruiz was eighth overall and seventh among collegians in 15:29.65 with Jake Smith following one spot later in 15:30.43.
 
Saturday's action is slated to begin with field events at 11 a.m. while the track events will start at 2 p.m.
