UTSA wins six events on Saturday at Scarlet Knights Open

NEW YORK CITY — The UTSA track & field team won six events on Saturday and collected nine total gold medals at the Scarlet Knights Open this weekend at Armory Track.

Bashiru Abdullahi, Gabriel Binion, Michael Campbell, Trevion McCalla, Dennis Phillips and the men's 4x400-meter relay team all were victorious on the final day of the meet to help push the Roadrunners' total number of podium finishes to 23, including 15 on the men's side.

Abdullahi tied own school record in the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.77 seconds in the final. The All-American posted a 7.83 clocking in the prelims before matching the top time in program history to finish ahead of Penn's Shane Gardner (7.88).

Binion posted a dramatic win in the men's triple jump to beat out teammate Jemuel Miller for the gold. The junior transfer from Australia was in second place behind Miller, who recorded a 15.40m (50-6.25) on his only measurement of the day, after measuring 15.15 meters (49-8.5) on his fourth attempt. He then leaped into first with a 15.33m (50-3.5) mark before improving to 15.44m (50-8) on his final trip down the runway, which moved him into the No. 5 position on UTSA's all-time performers list.

Campbell collected his second gold medal of the weekend with a win in the College Division of the men's shot put after finishing first in the College weight throw on Friday. The junior transfer from nearby Bloomfield, Connecticut, led a 1-2-3 finish by the Roadrunners with a heave of 17.10m (56-1.25) on his fifth attempt of the afternoon, which moved him from third place to first. Paul Bouey was second with a 16.19m (53-1.5) effort and Angel Robles picked up the bronze after logging a top mark of 16.12m (52-10.75).

The Roadrunners displayed their speed on the track on Saturday, winning a pair of sprints and closing the meet with a victory in the 4x4.

McCalla nipped Phillips at the tape to claim top honors in the men's 60m. The sophomore from Atascocita High School clocked a 6.79 for the win just ahead of Phillips' 6.83, while Brice Chabot was fourth in 6.85.

Phillips came back later in the afternoon to strike gold in the College 200m. The junior from Little Elm, Texas, sped to a 21.40 to cross first in the deuce, while McCalla, Mike Roth and Chabot were third (21.60), fourth (21.66) and fifth (21.68), respectively.

Phillips and Roth joined Logan Masters and Noah Rhodes on the 4x4 to bring home a win in the final race of the day. The quartet combined to clock a 3:16.24, UTSA's second-best time of the season in the event.

Meanwhile, the UTSA women registered four top-three finishes on the final day of the meet.

Lauren Roy was responsible for two of those podium showings on Saturday in the College Division sprints. The sophomore from Northern Ireland finished third in the 60m with 7.54 clocking and then earned the bronze in the 200m with a 24.40.

The other silver-medal performance came in the 4x4, as Ibiso David-West, Marie Duvigneau, Geraldy Barron and Alanah Yukich passed the baton to a runner-up time of 3:50.80.

In the field, Oreoluwa Adamson skipped to a bronze medal in the triple jump after touching the sand at a distance of 12.71m (41-8.5).

In other action on the final day, Yukich finished fifth in the 60m hurdles in 8.58.

UTSA won three events and posted eight top-three performances on Friday.

Miller soared to victory in the long jump, Roth won the 400 meters and Campbell collected gold in the weight throw for the men

Miller posted an indoor personal best of 7.63m (25-0.5) to collect the gold medal in the Championship long jump and move into a tie for second on UTSA's all-time performers list, just two centimeters shy of the school record.

Roth sped to a time of 48.21 seconds for the top clocking of the day in the College Division of the 400m.

The first win of the weekend went to Campbell, who claimed top honors in the College Division weight throw with a mark of 17.86m (58-7.25).

The Roadrunners will have one final tune-up for the Conference USA Indoor Championships when they travel to Houston for the Howie Ryan Invitational next Friday, Feb. 10.
