UTSA routed by UTEP on Saturday

EL PASO, Texas – The UTSA women's basketball team fell to UTEP by a final score of 79-52 on Saturday afternoon in El Paso, Texas, at Don Haskins Center. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE GAME
Elyssa Coleman led the team with 19 points while also collecting six boards. Jordyn Jenkins was the only other Roadrunner to score in double digits, putting up 10 points along with a team-high nine rebounds. UTSA performed well at the free-throw line, going 16-for-19 for 84.2 percentage at the line. The Roadrunners also outscored the Miners with 12 second-chance points to 11. 
 
BREAKDOWN OF THE GAME
Hailey Atwood opened up scoring in the game, landing a layup with 9:10 on the clock, but the Miners quickly responded as they went on a 11-point scoring run to take a hefty 11-2 lead just three minutes into the matchup. After a couple made free throws by Jenkins with 6:26 in the quarter, UTEP went on another scoring run to jump out to a 21-4 advantage. The Roadrunners ended the first quarter on a six-point scoring run but ended the period down by 24-12 to UTEP.
 
In the beginning of the second quarter, the Roadrunners continued what they started in the end of the first period as they extended their scoring run to 17 unanswered points. The run ended with a pullup jumper by Atwood with 4:44 on the clock to cut UTSA's deficit to just one point. UTEP finally scored in the second period with 3:58 on the clock, but UTSA continued to fight back. The Roadrunners ended the period down just three points to the Miners (30-27) to go to intermission with good motivation. 
 
The Miners opened up the second half with the first basket, but Jenkins responded quickly after with a jump shot to keep UTSA's deficit to a feasible three points. UTEP kicked it into high gear through the remainder of the third quarter, outscoring UTSA by 29 points to seven points. UTEP ended the third quarter with a 59-34 lead. The Roadrunners attempted to battle back with 18 points to the Miners' 20 points in the final period, but it was not quite enough to overcome UTEP's third quarter dominance. After the Miners opened the fourth quarter with a three-point jumper to extend their scoring run to 11 unanswered points, Coleman snapped that with a pullup jump shot. Coleman led the team with 11 points in the final quarter, going 4-for-6 from the field with three free throws as well. As the clock expired, freshman Alexis Parker sank a three-point basket, but the Roadrunners ultimately fell to the Miners, 79-52, on Saturday at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas. 
 
UTSA's record falls to 6-17 overall (4-10 in C-USA action), while UTEP's record improves to 16-7 overall (9-5 in conference play). 
 
UP NEXT: The Roadrunners return home to host Rice in UTSA's inaugural Pride Night on Feb. 16. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. (CT) on ESPN+ at the Convocation Center.
