UTSA concludes road trip with close loss to FIU

MIAMI – The UTSA women's basketball team lost to FIU, 51-48, on Saturday afternoon in Miami at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center.  
 
GAME LEADERS
Jordyn Jenkins led the team with 14 points, while recording seven rebounds. Freshman Sidney Love notched her first career double-double, putting up 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Elyssa Coleman was the third double-digit scorer with 10 points and nine rebounds, while also putting up a team-high six blocks.
 
The Roadrunners led the scoring in the paint with 26 points to the Panthers' 22 points. UTSA also led in second chance points (19) and fast break points (9). At the free-throw line, the Roadrunners shot 79 percent compared to the Panthers' 63 percent at the charity stripe. 
 
BREAKDOWN OF THE GAME
The Roadrunners scored first as Jenkins put up two baskets within the first minute and a half to give UTSA an early 4-0 lead. From here, the game saw three lead changes and a tie score, ending with the Panthers on top. FIU outscored UTSA by 13 points to 11 points in the first quarter. With 26 seconds left in the first period, Love sank a second-chance layup as the Roadrunners ended the first quarter down 13-11.
 
UTSA cut its deficit to just one point in the second quarter as the Roadrunners outscored the Panthers by 11 points to 10 points. The second period saw a lot of back-and-forth action, including four lead changes and four tie scores. UTSA went on a five-point scoring run, topped with a jump shot by Kyra White that that gave the Roadrunners a two-point lead with 5:41 left in the quarter. A free throw by the Panthers with milliseconds left on the clock gave FIU a 23-22 lead going to the halftime break.
 
The Roadrunners looked to make the difference coming back from the half, outscoring the Panthers by 15 points to 13 points. Once again, this quarter saw a lot of fighting back and forth as the lead was changed three times and tied three times. The Roadrunners jumped out to a five-point lead, their largest lead of the game with 1:50 on the clock, thanks to a free throw made by Jenkins. The Panthers came back with two baskets before time expired as UTSA took a 37-36 lead to the final quarter.  
 
The final quarter was the most intense of the game, seeing seven lead changes and one tie in the final 10 minutes. The Panthers outscored the Roadrunners by 15 points to 11 points in the final period. An 8-2 scoring run by FIU in the final two minutes and 10 seconds lifted the Panthers over UTSA, 51-48. 
 
UTSA's record falls to 4-14 overall (2-7 in C-USA action), while FIU's record improves to 10-8 overall (5-4 in conference play).
