Turner strikes gold in long jump to highlight Friday action for Roadrunners

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Jack Turner led a 1-2 finish in the men's long jump at the Lumberjack Team Challenge to highlight action for the UTSA track & field teams at a pair of meets on Friday.
 
Turner and Joel McFarlane were the top two finishers in the event to lead a contingent of Roadrunners competing in the meet hosted by Northern Arizona at the J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome. 
 
After fouling on his first attempt, Turner touched the sand at a distance of 7.34 meters (24-1) to take the lead in the 14-man competition. The four-time Conference USA multi-event champion from England then measured 6.84m (22-5.25) on his third try and held on for the win ahead of his teammate.
 
McFarlane opened with a 7.02m (23-0.5) mark to grab the lead through the first round before being passed by Turner in the second round. The Monikie, Scotland, native then improved with a 7.25m (23-9.5) measurement on two consecutive trips down the runway to secure silver ahead of UC Riverside's Kyan Thomas (7.00m/22-11.75).
 
In other action, Justin Wright finished sixth in the men's 60-meter hurdles with an 8.74 clocking, while Sigrid Kleive cleared 1.65m (5-5) for sixth in the women's long jump.
 
UTSA also sent more than 30 athletes to Houston on Friday for the Robert Platt Invitational, headlined by podium finishes from Michael Campbell, Abby Balli and Amaya King at Yeoman Fieldhouse.
 
Campbell opened the men's shot put competition with a mark of 16.53m (54-2.75) to claim second place through one round. Despite four straight fouls, the sophomore transfer from UTRGV maintained his stronghold on the runner-up spot behind Rice's Elian Ahmar (17.63m/57-10.25).
 
Angel Robles and Paul Bouey finished sixth (16.06m/52-8.25) and seventh (15.89m/52-1.75), respectively, in the shot put.
 
Campbell also finished seventh overall and sixth among collegians in the weight throw with a toss of 16.43m (53-11).
 
Meanwhile, Balli collected the bronze medal in the women's mile run. The two-time C-USA mile medalist from nearby Pasadena clocked a time of 5:03.01 to finish close behind runner-up Jillian Howard of Lamar (5:02.31) in the race won by Rice's Alyssa Balandran in 4:58.23. 
 
Madi Henry also finished in the top 10 in the mile, placing ninth in 5:09.96.
 
King also claimed bronze for the women, earning a third-place showing in the shot put. The junior transfer from Purdue saved her best for last, moving from sixth place into podium position on her last attempt of the night. After opening with a foul, she posted a mark of 13.72m (45-0.25) before measuring 14.55m (47-9) on her sixth try to jump into third.
 
Nearly two dozen UTSA student-athletes are slated compete in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational on Saturday at in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
