Roadrunners fall to No. 7 Texas in spring-opener

AUSTIN, Texas – The UTSA men's tennis team opened its 2023 spring season with a loss to seventh-ranked Texas, 0-7.
 
The Roadrunners (0-1) competed in six singles matches and three doubles matches on Friday evening. No. 7 Texas (1-0) didn't drop a match on the evening, sweeping the board.
 
The evening began with doubles play in the much-anticipated meeting between UTSA's sixth-ranked pair of Alan Magadan and Sebastian Rodriguez and Texas's seventh-ranked duo of Eliot Spizzirri and Cleeve Harper. Spizzirri and Harper took the match 6-3, claiming the top ten matchup. Tiago Torres and Jackson Ross fell to Siem Woldeab and Pierre- Yves Bailly 6-1 while the pair of Tomás Pinho and Garrett Skelly fell to Chih Chi Huang and Eshan Talluri, 4-3.
 
Next came singles action. The first match saw #13 Woldeab defeat Rodriguez (6-1, 6-2) while in the second match, #104 Evin McDonald downed Ross (6-2, 6-2). The third single match featured Torres against #3 Spizzirri. Torres gave the third-ranked player a run, eventually exiting in the third set (4-6, 6-2, 3-1). Bailly then bested Magadan (6-3, 7-6) while Huang beat Pinho (6-7, 6-4, 1-0). The singles matches concluded with Texas's Harper beating Danijal Muminovic (6-4, 1-6, 7-6).
