UTSA drops contest to Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The UTSA women's basketball team fell to Florida Atlantic, 81-66, on Thursday night in Boca Raton, Fla., at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.  
 
GAME LEADERS
Jordyn Jenkins led the team with her fifth double-double of the season, notching 25 points and 10 rebounds. Jenkins went an impressive 12-for-15 at the charity stripe. Freshman Madison Cockrell recorded her first double-digit scoring game of her career with 10 points. 
 
BREAKDOWN OF THE GAME
The game had a slow start as the first bucket wasn't until a minute and 20 seconds in. The Owls scored first with 8:40 on the clock, but the Roadrunners quickly responded as Jordyn Jenkins scored UTSA's first bucket at 7:54. The first quarter saw three ties and two lead changes but a 10-4 scoring run by Florida Atlantic in the last three minutes gave the Owls a 20-12 lead after the first quarter. 
 
UTSA picked up the pace in the second quarter, outscoring Florida Atlantic by 20 points to 19 points. The Roadrunners were able to battle back to a one-point deficit with a 8-2 scoring run topped off by a Siena Guttadauro three-point basket with 7:28 on the clock. The Owls kept fighting to extend their lead, using a 13-2 scoring run to jump out to a 12-point lead with 3:21 left in the second period. The Roadrunners battled back to cut their deficit to seven points before the intermission, ending the first half down 39-32. 
 
Coming back from the break, the Roadrunners slowed down in the third quarter as they only scored nine points to the Owls' 18 points. Florida Atlantic used a seven-point run to extend their lead to 57-41 at the end of the third quarter. 
 
UTSA outscored Florida Atlantic in the final quarter by 25 points to 24 points. As the Owls started to become fatigued, the Roadrunners took advantage of their mistakes, converting eight Florida Atlantic turnovers into 12 points. Jenkins scored 11 points, going 6-for-9 at the free throw line as she drew six fouls in the final period. The Owls jumped out to a 25-point lead at one point, but the Roadrunners battled back to a 15-point deficit. Cockrell sank a three-point basket with 16 seconds left in the game, but UTSA ultimately fell to Florida Atlantic, 88-61. 
 
UTSA's record falls to 4-13 overall (2-6 in C-USA action), while Florida Atlantic's record to 11-6 overall (4-4 in conference play).
