Coleman’s career night not enough as UTSA falls to TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas – Sophomore Elyssa Coleman paced the Roadrunners with a career night, but the UTSA women's basketball team fell to TCU, 74-67, on Wednesday night at Schollmaier Arena.

GAME LEADERS
Coleman was the star of the show, recording her first double-double of the season with career-highs in both points (12) and rebounds (12), also notching five blocks on the night. Jordyn Jenkins led in scoring with 16 points, her second double-digit scoring game of the season. Two more Roadrunners recorded double-digit scoring games – freshman Siena Guttadauro with 11 points (her first career double-digit scoring game) and Deborah Nwakamma with 10 points.

UTSA led in multiple categories throughout the game with a 70.6 percent free-throw percentage, 41 rebounds, 12 assists, and six blocks. The Roadrunners had a total of 16 second-chance points, as well as 34 points in the paint.

BREAKDOWN OF THE GAME
In a game that saw seven lead changes and one tie, Jenkins won the opening tip for the Roadrunners. Elyssa Coleman opened up scoring with a made free throw a minute and a half into the game. The lead bounced back and forth for the next few minutes until the Horned Frogs jumped out to a seven-point lead with two straight made jump shots with a little over six minutes on the clock. The Roadrunners cut their deficit to three points multiple times throughout the game but the first quarter ended with a 23-16 TCU lead.

UTSA used a strong second quarter to end the first half in a promising spot, down by just one point to TCU, 37-36. After the Horned Frogs opened the half with a layup, the Roadrunners went on a six-point run early in the second period. A layup made by freshman Alexis Parker in her career debut resulted in the first tie of the game (29-29) with 5:13 on the clock. A three-point shot by Deborah Nwakamma with 3:58 remaining in the first half gave UTSA a 32-31 lead. TCU battled to take the lead back through the next few minutes. Freshman Sidney Love made two free throws with 20 seconds on the clock, before hitting a layup at the buzzer to take the game to halftime with the Roadrunners down by only a point to the Horned Frogs.

The Horned Frogs opened up scoring in the second half, but junior Kyra White responded just 15 seconds later with a second chance layup to cut UTSA's deficit to one point. TCU continued to hold the lead through the third quarter, outscoring UTSA by 17 points to 11 points. The Roadrunners got within one point once more in the period, by way of a layup made by White with 4:05 on the clock. The Horned Frogs used a six-point unanswered run to jump out to 54-47 at the end of the third.

Jenkins excelled in the fourth quarter, scoring 14 of UTSA's 20 points in the final period. She went 5-for-7 from the field, while shooting 4-for-6 from the charity line. The Roadrunners went on a five-point run with less than two minutes left on the clock to cut TCU's lead to six points. With six seconds left, Jenkins attempted to cut the Horned Frogs' lead further but TCU snuck past UTSA in a final score of 74-67.
