Jenkins named to Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Preseason Watch List

HOPEWELL, N.J. – UTSA women's basketball newcomer Jordyn Jenkins has been named to the 2022-23 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award Preseason Watch List.

"I am thrilled that Jordyn was recognized on the Becky Hammon watch list," head coach Karen Aston said. "She is a very talented player that will impact our program in so many ways.  Jordyn gives us versatility at the forward position and someone to "play through."  I have enjoyed not only coaching her but getting to know her as a person and watching her grow as a leader. Her future is very bright, not only here at UTSA but as a future professional."

The Becky Hammon Award was first given out in 2020 and aims to celebrate those playing in the 26 mid-major conferences. Since its' inception a few years ago, Jenkins is only the second Conference USA player named to the preseason list, after WKU's Raneem Elgedawy was named to the list in 2021. A few other C-USA players were added to midseason lists in the past few years. Rice's Nancy Mulkey and MTSU's Anastasia Hayes were both added to 2021's midseason list. In 2022, WKU's Meral Abdelgawad was named to the midseason list and was a semifinalist for the award.

According to Her Hoops Stats, the organization will name 15 players to the midseason watch list in January. The 10 semifinalists will be announced in February, with five finalists being announced in early March. The winner will be announced in late March. The list is fluid and players may play their way on or off the list over the course of the season.

Jenkins is a transfer from the University of Southern California, where she played the last two seasons. At USC, she led the team offensively in almost every category while starting in 26 of 28 games last season. Jenkins led the Trojan in total points (384/14.8 per game), free throws made (110) and field goals made (134). She had 173 rebounds, the second most on the team. The Kent, Wash., native was named the Pac-12 Most Improved Player, as well as earning All-Pac 12 Honors at the end of the season.

The Roadrunners are set to kick off their 2022-23 campaign on Nov. 7 as they tipoff against Stephen F. Austin at 6:30 p.m. (CT) in Nacogdoches, Texas.
