Spence books trip to Eugene on Saturday at NCAA West Preliminary

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — UTSA senior Danielle Spence has advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the triple jump after a top-12 finish on Saturday at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds at John McDonnell Field.

Spence earned a spot in the national meet for the second time in her illustrious career with a ninth-place showing on Saturday evening. The Jamaican posted a wind-aided mark of 13.41 meters (44-0) to book her trip to Eugene for the triple jump final, which is set for 4:50 p.m. on Saturday, June 11.

After fouling on her first attempt, the nine-time Conference USA medalist broke the sand at a distance of 13.04m (42-9.5) on her second trip down the runway. Needing an improvement to keep her hopes alive for a second career All-America certificate, the 2019 second-team indoor All-American skipped to her top measurement of the day to secure her spot in the field of 24 two weeks from today.

Oreoluwa Adamson also qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary triple jump and the sophomore from England finished 29th with a wind-aided mark of 12.61m (41-4.5).

Competing in her second straight NCAA West quarterfinal round of the 400-meter hurdles, Alanah Yukich clocked a time of 59.02 seconds to finish 19th. The Conference USA champion was sixth in the second of three heats after posting a 58.80 on Thursday night to advance to Saturday's race.

Lacee Barnes, the school record holder in the discus, saw her UTSA career come to a close. The senior from the Cayman Islands did not record a measurement in three attempts in her second event of the meet and her second straight NCAA West Preliminary Round appearance in the discus.

Three UTSA men advanced out of the West Preliminary Rounds to the NCAA Championships, which are set for June 8 & 10 in Eugene, Oregon. Bashiru Abdullahi improved his own UTSA record to 13.52 to finish third in the 110m hurdles on Friday and earn a spot in the national semifinals, which are scheduled for 7:32 p.m. CT on June 8. Christiaan Le Roux qualified for the long jump final, which will be contested at 8 p.m. CT on June 8, after he recorded a 12th-place mark of 7.69m (25-2.75) on Wednesday. Jemuel Miller turned in an outdoor season best of 16.06m (52-8.25) to place ninth in the triple jump on Friday and move into the final slated for 8:20 p.m. CT on June 10.
