Boswell smashes meet record on Saturday at Alumni Muster

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Maddie Boswell broke the meet record in the women's 5,000 meters to headline action for the UTSA track & field teams on Saturday at the Alumni Muster at E.B. Cushing Stadium.

Boswell clocked a time of 16:45.26 for her first individual win as a Roadrunner in the second-to-last race of the night, smashing the previous meet record of 17:43.18 set by Wayland Baptist's Jackline Cherono in 2019 by nearly one full minute. The senior transfer from Texas, who started her career at Texas A&M, was neck-and-neck with A&M's Grace Plain until the final lap when the Fort Worth native made her move and took the lead for good to beat the Aggie to the finish line. Boswell's time was just off her UTSA career best of 16:42.99 posted at the Texas Relays in March, which made her the program's No. 2 all-time performer in the event.

Meanwhile, Danielle Spence collected a silver medal in the women's triple jump with her top wind-legal measurement of the outdoor campaign. The senior All-American skipped to a mark of 13.17 meters (43-2.5) to place second behind Oklahoma's Mikeisha Welcome (13.41m/44-0) in the 13-person field. The Jamaican's top mark of the evening came on her third trip down the runway after she opened with a 13.05m (42-9.75) effort.

Thennelle Williams sped to a season-best time of 11.66 to finish third among collegiate sprinters and sixth overall in the women's 100m. The freshman from Jamaica also helped the 4x100m relay team, along with Ibiso David-West, Geraldy Barron and Vera Chinedu, clock a season-best 46.07 for fourth place.

In other action on the track for the women, Alanah Yukich circled the oval in a time of 54.50 to finish sixth in the 400m and Mackenzie Grimes placed fifth among collegians and seventh overall in the 400m hurdles with a 1:00.66 clocking

Back in the field, Lacee Barnes placed sixth in the discus with a throw of 47.62m (156-3) and the senior from the Cayman Islands also finished 10th in the shot put with a mark of 14.79m (48-6.25).

On the men's side, Jose Garcia stopped the clock in a season-best time of 10.42 to finish eight among collegians in the 100m. The freshman from Harlingen came back later in the evening to finish ninth in the 200m in 21.30.

In the field, Paul Bouey made the most of a busy day in the throws with a pair of top-eight finishes. The Chile native took eighth in the shot put with a top mark of 16.24m (53-3.5) with teammate Angel Robles finishing close behind with a 15.79m (51-9.75) measurement. He later placed seventh in the discus with a throw of 48.14m (157-11).

In late-night track events, Idol Ramon and Landon Blankenship finished eighth (10:01.88) and ninth (10:05.27), respectively, in the 3,000m steeplechase, while Jake Smith was ninth in the 5,000m in 15:49.36.

The Roadrunners will return to action when they host the Conference USA Outdoor Championships on May 12-15 at Park West Athletics.
