UTSA captures 10 gold medals at Roadrunner Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA track & field teams won 10 events and posted 36 podium finishes at the Roadrunner Invitational on Saturday at Park West Athletics Complex.

There was an even split of five gold medals apiece for the men and women on what was Senior Day for the Roadrunners. The men recorded 20 top-three finishes with 16 coming on the women's side.

Lacee Barnes led the way with a pair of victories in the second home meet of the season for the Roadrunners. The senior from the Cayman Islands turned in a career performance in the women's shot put to finish as the top collegian and also claimed top honors in the discus.

Barnes measured 15.53m (50-11.5) to finish second overall in the shot put behind former UTSA All-American Maia Campbell's mark of 15.79m (51-9.75). That effort smashed her previous career best of 14.86m (48-9) set at the C-USA Indoor in February.

Barnes also won the discus and nearly matched her PB registered one week ago at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in the process. After opening with a mark of 46.75m (153-4) on her first attempt, she followed a pair of fouls with a 51.65m (169-5) measurement to overtake Rice's Julie Perez for first place in the field. Barnes held on for the win and her second-best throw of 49.88m (163-7) also bested Perez' top mark of 49.09m (161-0).

Marilis Remmel collected UTSA's first gold medal of the day, leading a 1-2-3 finish for the Roadrunners in the javelin throw. The Estonian and school record holder tossed the implement to a season-best distance of 46.85 meters (153-8) for first, while Sigrid Kleive placed second with a mark of 42.62m (139-10) and Maren Wilms took third with a 32.46m (106-6) throw.

Jonathan Barraza earned his first collegiate win at the top of a 1-2-3-4 UTSA finish in the men's pole vault. The freshman from San Antonio Harlan High School sailed over the bar at a height of 4.70m (15-5) to better his previous season best of 4.59m (15-0.75) posted at the Conference USA Indoor Championships.

Jack Turner cleared a career best 4.60m (15-1) for runner-up honors in the pole vault, while Marcus Ramirez and Justin Wright placed third (4.40m/14-5.25) and fourth (3.95m/12-11.5), respectively.

The Roadrunners swept the long jump crowns to continue their strong showings in the horizontal jumps this year.

Ingeborg Gruenwald won the women's competition with a leap of 6.35m (20-10). After opening with a mark of 6.20m (20-4.25), the indoor All-American saved her best jump for last in collecting her seventh collegiate victory in the event.

In the men's long jump, Christiaan Le Roux was second overall and first among collegians with a leap of 7.35m (24-1.5), while Jemuel Miller posted a 7.14m (23-5.25) measurement to end up one spot behind his teammate in the event won by former Roadrunner Sam Healy (7.40m/24-3.5).

Grant Szalek struck gold in the men's high jump, clearing 2.02m (6-7.5) to beat the field. The senior from Australia was successful on his first attempts at 1.90m, 1.96m and 2.02m before he bowed out at 2.08m. Joel McFarlane ended up with third place after soaring over the bar at 1.85m (6-0.75).

Jorge Ayala picked up the second win of his UTSA career, taking top honors in the shot put. The Edinburg, Texas, native measured a personal-best distance of 16.64m (54-7.25) on his fifth attempt of the day to finish ahead of UTRGV's Michael Campbell (16.35m) with teammates Angel Robles and Paul Bouey claiming third (15.93m/52-3.25) and fourth (15.73m/51-7.25), respectively.

In other action in the field for the women, Acacia Astwood posted a season-best throw of 56.27m (184-7) to finish second in the hammer, while Maren Wilms cleared 1.61m (5-3.25) for runner-up honors in the high jump. Zoe Shanklin took third overall and second among collegians in the shot put with a mark of 14.35m (47-1).

Despite a limited roster competing on the track, UTSA still tallied two more wins and 15 podium finishes in the running events.

Alanah Yukich sped to a time of 13.98 seconds to cross the finish line first in the women's 100m hurdles ahead of teammate Maren Wilms, who placed second in 15.98.

Mike Roth picked up the other win on the track as the top collegian and third-place finisher overall in the men's 200m. The freshman from Canada clocked a 21.27 just ahead of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Ketavion Humber (21.37) in a race won by Emmanuel Matadi, competing unattached, in a facility record 20.33, while Lirim Emerllahu took third among collegiate sprinters in 21.53.

In other action for the men, Brice Chabot and Antony Ma placed 2-3 in the 100m with times of 10.71 and 10.88, respectively, while Noah Rhodes was the runner-up in the 400m with a 49.41 clocking. Gabriel Green finished third in the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.98, JD Corona was the bronze medalist in the 800m in 2:01.06, Jake Smith placed third overall and second among collegians in the 3,000m in 9:08.67 and Michael Paredes was fourth overall and third in the 1,500m in 4:00.72.

On the women's side, Geraldy Barron clocked a wind-aided time of 24.97 for third overall and second among collegians in the 200m, while Brooke Lomax notched third-place finishes in both the 400m (58.19) and 800m (2:45.41). Brooke Veltman added a bronze medal in the 3,000m in 11:27.74.
