Balli, Yukich earn runner-up finishes on final day of West Coast trip

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Abby Balli and Alanah Yukich earned runner-up finishes at the Beach Invitational on Saturday at Jack Rose Track on the final day of UTSA's trip to the West Coast.

Meanwhile, Jemuel Miller logged a top-five finish in the Elite Division of the men's triple jump at the 62nd annual Mt. SAC Relays on Saturday afternoon at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.

Balli secured a silver medal in the women's 1,500 meters with a career-best time of 4:33.26. The Pasadena, Texas, native beat Utah Valley's Taylor Viertel (4:34.00) to the finish line and was close behind event champion Ella Byers of South Dakota (4:31.00). The two-time Conference USA medalist in the mile turned in her 1,500m PB just one day after clocking her previous top time of 4:35.24 at the Mt. SAC Relays.

Yukich also posted a second-place finish at Long Beach State, circling the oval in a season-best time of 58.10 to place just ahead of Iowa Paige Magee (58.26) and close behind winner Fegor Clifford of Akron (57.41). The Perth, Australia, native turned in her top time of the 2022 outdoor campaign one day after placing ninth in 58.20 at the Mt. SAC Relays.

Over in Walnut, Calif., Miller finished fifth overall and fourth among collegiate competitors in the triple jump with a mark of 15.73 meters (51-7.25). The indoor All-American and C-USA champion recorded his longest jump of the day on his second try after opening with a foul. Following a second foul in the third round, the Bridgetown, Barbados, native posted measurements of 15.47m (50-9.25) and 15.52m (50-11) during the final, ending up just ahead of Iowa's James Carter (15.58m) and close behind Texas Tech's Chris Welch (15.91m).

Back at the Beach Invitational, Lacee Barnes continued her busy week by competing in a pair of throwing events. The senior from the Cayman Islands finished sixth in the shot put with a mark of 15.49m (50-10), which came on her first turn in the ring. She placed in front of BYU's Sierra Freeland (15.30m) and close behind Washington's Makayla Kelby (15.95m), and her top heave of the competition came up just shy of her personal best of 15.53m (50-11.5) posted last month at the Roadrunner Invitational. Barnes also registered a discus throw of 45.84m (150-4) for 28th among collegians.

The Roadrunners will return to action next Saturday, April 23, when they travel to Houston for the J. Fred Duckett Twilight.
