UTSA to host Roadrunner Invitational on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA track & field program will host the Roadrunner Invitational this Saturday, April 2, at Park West Athletics Complex. Admission and parking are free.
 
The Roadrunners will compete against athletes from Rice, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UTRGV in their second home meet of the outdoor campaign.
 
Field events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with the hammer throw, javelin and pole vault. Track events will start at 2 p.m. with the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
  
This will mark UTSA's third meet of the outdoor season and its second at home.
 
Last week at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Lacee Barnes improved her own UTSA and Cayman Islands record in the discus with a throw of 51.67 meters (169-6) to finish second in Section B, while Jemuel Miller earned Conference USA Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week accolades after skipping to a 15.95m (52-4) mark for fourth place in the top section of the triple jump. Miller, an indoor first-team All-American, currently stands sixth nationally in the event.
 
The men's 4x100m relay team of Dennis Phillips, Jose Garcia, Diego Pettorossi and Trevion McCalla passed the baton around the oval in 39.95 seconds to win the University/College Division, while Bashiru Abdullahi sped to a wind-aided 13.66 clocking to finish sixth in Section A of the 110m hurdles, a time that currently ranks ninth in the country.
 
In other Texas Relays action, Alanah Yukich posted a season-best time of 58.46 in the prelims of the 400m hurdles, a time that places her 12th on the national list, before finishing ninth in the final. 
 
Two weeks after earning second-team All-America accolades in the indoor long jump, Ingeborg Gruenwald leaped to a ninth-place mark of 6.42m (21-0.75) in the top section, good for eighth nationally.
 
At the UTSA Invitational two weeks ago, the Roadrunners captured 13 gold medals and earned 29 podium finishes during the two-day meet including a record-setting performance in the men's 4x100-meter relay. Phillips, Pettorossi, McCalla and Garcia clocked a 39.34 to break the school and meet records, and that time currently ranks 10th in the nation.
 
McCalla also sped to a meet record 20.99 in the 200m and earned Conference USA Men's Track Athlete of the Week accolades for his performance.
 
Meanwhile, Grant Szalek made it a sweep of the C-USA men's weekly awards after winning the triple jump with a mark of 15.63 meters (51-3.5), which matches his personal best and ranks 16th nationally.
 
For the women, Sigrid Kleive won the high jump with a 1.67m (5-5.75) clearance and took top honors in the javelin with a throw of 44.29m (145-3), while Thennelle Williams raced to gold in the 200m in 24.56 and joined Ibiso David-West, Geraldy Barron and Vera Chinedu to win the 4x1 in 46.08.
