Roadrunners fall to Owls in regular-season finale

HOUSTON – The UTSA women's basketball team closed out the regular-season in an 86-48 loss to Rice at Tudor Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.
 
Elyssa Coleman scored 15 points but it wasn't enough to overcome 14 3-pointers from the Owls.
 
Rice scored the first points of the game with a 3-pointer. Lapraisjah Johnson put UTSA on the board with a free throw, but the Owls went on a 4-0 run to extend the lead to six, 7-1. Queen Ulabo broke the scoring drought with a layup at the 6:22 mark as the Roadrunners trailed 7-3. Rice hit a scoring drought as UTSA hit a 6-0 run to tie the game 9-9 with 2:26 remaining. The Owls then went on a scoring surge to regain the lead (17-11). Elyssa Coleman hit a last-minute layup to trail 17-13 at the end of the first.
 
The first three minutes of the second quarter started as a battle for the ball as the teams went back and forth scoring to make it a two-point game, 21-19, at the 7:01 mark. Rice hit a 3-pointer to push the lead back to four, but Coleman made a shot and drew a foul to bring the Roadrunners back within two, 24-22 with 6:24 remaining. The Owls went on another 6-0 run to lead 30-22 until Deborah Nwakamma started a 5-3 run to trail by six. A Rice 3-pointer with 24 seconds left made it a nine point spread (36-27) at the half.
 
The Owls came out of the locker room on a 15-2 run to lead 51-29 at the 8:12 mark. Jadyn Pimentel made a layup with 7:11 as UTSA trailed 51-31. Rice then hit another run to push the lead once more. Both teams hit short scoring runs in the final minutes of the quarter as the Owls led 68-40 going to the fourth.

Rice continued its momentum in the final 10 minutes, scoring 10 consecutive points to open the quarter. Ulabo broke the drought and the remainder of the game was a battle for the basket.
 
The Roadrunners return to action March 8 at the conference tournament.
