UTSA welcomes SWAC favorite Southern

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA (7-1) is set to welcome the preseason SWAC favorite Southern Jaguars (2-7) for a weekend series that begins tomorrow, March 4 at 6 p.m.

The two schools will be meeting for the first time ever in this weekend's series.

UTSA enters this weekend's series riding a five-game win streak that dates back to last Friday. Last Friday, the Roadrunners won both games of their home-opening doubleheader against Seattle. UTSA then carried that success through the weekend as they beat Seattle again Saturday and Sunday to sweep the four-game series against the Redhawks. Then, on Monday, UTSA played host to No. 2 Stanford and beat the Cardinal in walk-off fashion in the tenth inning to complete the upset. It was the second-highest team UTSA had ever defeated (beat No. 1 Baylor in 2012).

UTSA was led offensively against the Cardinal by junior outfielder Shane Sirdashney who went 3-5 with two RBI at the plate. However, the hero of the game was Leyton Barry who, in the bottom of the tenth, launched a deep base hit into left-center to score Sirdashney which gave UTSA the win.

Against Stanford, UTSA threw seven pitchers as freshman righthander Ryan Beaird got his first career start. Beaird and the six other UTSA pitchers combined to hold the highly explosive Stanford offense to only six hits. Roadrunner pitcher John Chomko recorded the win for UTSA, as he entered in the ninth and pitched two hitless innings against Stanford, striking out four.
