UTSA Invitational set for Friday-Saturday at Park West Athletics Complex

SAN ANTONIO — The outdoor track & field season is slated to get underway this week, as the UTSA Invitational will be held on Friday-Saturday, March 18-19, at Park West Athletics Complex (8000 TX-1604 Loop). Admission and parking are free.

Now in its eighth year, the annual home meet will see the Roadrunners compete against athletes from Kansas State, Rice, Stephen F. Austin, Texas, Texas State and UIW.

The two-day meet will get underway at 2 p.m. Friday with the shot put and hammer throw, followed by the javelin at 6 p.m. and a rolling schedule of distance races at 8 p.m.

Saturday's action is slated to start with field events at 11 a.m. and running events at 2 p.m.

The Roadrunners claimed 12 podium finishes at last year's UTSA Invitational including Ingeborg Gruenwald's win in the women's long jump (6.27 meters/20-7) and a sweep of the 400-meter hurdles crowns by Alanah Yukich (58.70) and Andrew Pirog (51.84).

Gruenwald and Jemuel Miller are fresh off All-America performances last weekend at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala, in the last action for UTSA. Gruenwald, a sophomore from Salzburg, Austria, earned second-team honors with a 13th-place leap of 6.24m (20-5.75) in the long jump. Miller, a true freshman from Bridgetown, Barbados finished sixth in the men's triple jump with a mark of 16.17m (53-0.75) to collect first-team accolades and better his own UTSA standard in the event.
