Bott, Fanfelle lead UTSA at Louisiana Classics

LAFAYETTE, La. — Hunter Bott and Christian Fanfelle finished in the top 20 individuals to lead the UTSA men's golf team to a 10th-place showing at the 37th annual Louisiana Classics, which wrapped up on Tuesday at Oakbourne Country Club (par 72/6,866 yards).
 
Bott and Fanfelle each turned in 3-under-par 213 to end up as part of a four-way tie for 17th place in the 92-man field, helping the Roadrunners record an 8-over 872 (293-285-294) and finish one stroke in front of tie for 11th between Illinois State and Rice. UTSA also placed two shots ahead of Sam Houston and five better than host Louisiana in the 17-team field.
 
Bott led UTSA in the final round with a 2-under 70 that featured six birdies, three on four-hole stretches on each side, en route to the third top 20 of his junior campaign. The Montgomery native opened with a 71-72—143 and ended up leading the Roadrunners with 36 pars to go along with 11 birdies for the week.
 
Fanfelle logged his fifth top 20 of the season by posting rounds of 70, 71 and 72 for his second straight 3-under 54-hole total. The senior all-conference performer paced UTSA and ranked fifth among all players with 15 birdies, including four on the final day.
 
Austin natives Jack Wehman and Michael Rome each registered a 76 for UTSA's other two counting scores in the final round. Wehman, a freshman out of Vandegrift High School, ended up with a share of 69th at 8-over 224 after opening with a 76-72—148. Rome, a senior from Westlake High School, recorded a 76-73—149 over the opening 36 holes and finished tied for 73rd (225).
 
David Harrison rounded out the Roadrunners' lineup in 84th with a 231, which included a 2-under 70 in the second round on Monday.
 
Competing as an individual, Reed Foster tied for 80th with a 230 that was capped by a 1-over 73 on the strength of four birdies on Tuesday.
 
No. 21 Texas A&M ran away with the team title with a 47-under 817 behind individual medalist Sam Bennett, who shot am 18-under 198 (66-66-66). No. 25 LSU was second (829), while top-50 squads No. 17 Ole Miss and 41st-ranked Little Rock placed fourth (851) and 870), respectively.
 
The Roadrunners will return to action next Monday-Tuesday, March 21-22, when they travel to the Golf Club of Houston for the All-American Intercollegiate.
