UTSA drops series opener to Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma Sooners defeated UTSA Saturday, 10-5, in the opening game of the weekend series.

UTSA (10-3) got a multi-homerun performance from senior outfielder Ian Bailey, but it wasn't enough as Oklahoma (7-5) used 15 hits to put up ten runs to top the Roadrunners.

Bailey now has six homeruns on the season and has been on a homerun tear as of late. The senior has five homeruns in his last five games, with two multi-homerun performances. Today's homers were both solo shots. Also doing well at the plate today was Shane Sirdashney who has gone 8-12 in his last three games. Sirdashney had two hits, two walks and an RBI on the day.

Jacob Jimenez (2-1) started the game for the Roadrunners and made it through 2.2 innings before John Chomko came in for relief. In Chomko's 2.1 innings of work, the junior allowed two hits while striking out three. Following Chomko's stint on the mound came Drake Smith. The final pitcher of the day for UTSA was Ryan Ward. The Schertz native pitched for 2.2 innings, allowed only two hits and struck out five.

UTSA started hot out of the gates in the first inning as, with two outs, Ian Bailey launched a solo shot to left to put the Roadrunners ahead 1-0.

In the bottom of the second, the Sooners got a leadoff triple from third baseman Cade Horton. Horton was able to score off a Diego Muniz sac fly to tie the game at one apiece.

Oklahoma's offense exploded in the bottom of the third, as the Sooners strung together five hits with two outs. The Sooners got two RBI doubles and two RBI singles in a two-out rally to put five on the board to push their lead to 6-1.

In the top of the fifth, freshman outfielder Isaiah Walker singled to right and a batter later was able to advance to third thanks to a fielder's choice and an OU throwing error. With two outs, Sirdashney stepped up to the plate and spanked a double to center field, scoring Walker and making the game 6-2.

The Sooners wouldn't wait long to get that run back though as, in the bottom of the fifth, OU used a sac fly to score Jimmy Crooks. The lead moved back to five and the score sat at 7-2.

Oklahoma would pile on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to two RBI singles and an RBI double. After six, OU led 10-2.

The Roadrunners started to rally in the eighth, as the inning started with Bailey's second solo homer of the game to make things 10-3. Next, Sirdashney drew a walk and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. He then advanced to third on a Matt King single. Garrett Poston then drew a walk to load the bases for UTSA. A Diaz single scored Sirdashney and a Barry groundout scored King to cut the lead to 10-5.

In the bottom of the eighth, Ward struck out three to give UTSA a chance in the ninth, but the Roadrunner runs didn't come and the score held at 10-5.
