Adamson, Healy claim gold on Friday at Houston G5 & Super 22 Invitational

HOUSTON — Oreoluwa Adamson and Sam Healy swept the long jump competitions to highlight Friday action for UTSA at the Houston G5 & Super 22 Invitational at Yeoman Fieldhouse.

Adamson took top honors the women's long jump in the first event of the two-day meet for the second win of her young UTSA career. The London, England, native leaped to a season-best mark of 5.82 meters (19-1.25) on her opening jump of the afternoon, only to see Lamar's Parl Eelma match that distance on her sixth and final attempt. However, Adamson claimed the gold medal by virtue of her next-best measurement. In fact, three of her other marks bettered Eelma's second-best jump of 5.69m.

Healy stayed undefeated in the men's long jump this season with an indoor personal-best performance. The Carrigaline, Ireland, native recorded an indoor PR of 7.60m (24-11.25) on his third trip down the runway to finish ahead of Texas Southern's Kenneth Pree (7.44m). Trailing after the first round, Healy, who won the Ted Nelson Invitational two weeks ago with a 7.48m (24-6.5) effort, posted a mark of 7.41m (24-3.75) on his second try to take the lead for good before turning the best indoor long jump of his career on the next attempt.

On the track, Bashiru Abdullahi placed third overall and posted a narrow runner-up finish among collegiate competitors in the men's 60-meter hurdles. The junior from Nigeria clocked a time of 7.90 seconds to cross just behind Houston's DJ Akindele (7.87) and event winner Jeff Julmis (7.83), who was competing for Haiti.

For the women, Acacia Astwood finished third in the weight throw with a mark of 17.98m (59-0), while Marie Duvigneau was fifth overall and third among collegians in the 400m with a 56.43 clocking in her UTSA debut.

Saturday's action is slated to start at noon in the field and 3 p.m. on the track.
