Campbell, Kleive shine on Friday at Roadrunner Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — Maia Campbell broke her own school record while registering a pair of top-three finishes and Sigrid Kleive won the javelin to highlight Friday action for the UTSA track & field teams at the Roadrunner Invitational at Park West Athletics Complex.

One week after breaking an eight-year-old UTSA outdoor record in the shot put, Campbell bettered her own standard with a second-place mark of 15.95 meters (52-4). The senior from Converse Judson High School posted a 15.14m measurement on her first attempt to secure a spot in the final, where she unleashed the school-record effort on her fifth turn in the ring. Friday's performance marked an 18-centimeter improvement from her previous personal best of 15.77m set last week in a runner-up showing at the Texas A&M Team Invitational.

Campbell, who owns UTSA's indoor shot put record with an overall PR of 16.12m (52-10.75) established while winning the 2020 Conference USA crown, also registered a third-place finish in the hammer with a throw of 53.50m (175-6).

Kleive grabbed the first gold medal of the meet for the Roadrunners with a winning throw in the javelin. The Aalesund, Norway, native tossed the implement to a distance of 44.90m (147-4) on her third attempt of the day to place ahead of Akron's Laurel Bristow (44.25m) and fellow UTSA freshman Marilis Remmel (43.70m).

It marked the first win of the season in the event for Kleive, who set the school record with a 45.51m (149-4) measurement at the UTSA Invitational in March only to see Remmel eclipse that standard with a 45.55m (149-5) effort last week in College Station.

Omar Bekdache and Justin Wright each registered third-place finishes to pace the men.

Bekdache smashed his previous PR in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:51.30 to cross third on Friday night. The junior from Cedar Park, Texas, bettered his previous top time in the event of 10:05.93 by more than 14 seconds.

Meanwhile, Wright climbed from sixth place to third in the decathlon on the final day of the competition. The Dripping Springs, Texas, native entered Friday with 3,275 points before opening with a 15.07 clocking for 841 points in the 110m hurdles. After posting a 29.49m (96-9) mark in the discus, he cleared 4.10m (13-5.25) in the pole vault before measuring 42.84m (140-7) in the javelin and timing a 5:01.70 in the 1,500m.

Maren Wilms also moved up in the standings on the final day of the heptathlon, jumping from ninth to fourth overall and third among collegiate competitors after scoring 4,722 points. She leaped to a distance of 5.70m (18-8.5) for 759 points in the long jump before posting a javelin throw of 26.95m (88-5) and a time of 2:23.21 in the 800m.

The final day of the Roadrunner Invitational will get underway with field events at 11 a.m. followed by running events at 2 p.m. Spectators are not allowed inside Park West Athletics Complex due to COVID-19 protocols.
