Campbell, Balli highlight Saturday action at Texas A&M Team Invitational

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Maia Campbell broke the school record in the shot put and Aby Balli won the 1,500 meters to highlight action for the UTSA track & field teams on Saturday at the Texas A&M Team Invitational at E.B. Cushing Stadium.

Campbell took down an eight-year-old UTSA standard in the women's shot put in a runner-up finish on the final day of the meet less than a month after flirting with the record. The senior from Converse Judson High School measured 15.77 meters (51-9) on her third attempt to eclipse the previous school record of 15.39m established by Zaquita McClanahan in 2013, bettering her previous personal record of 15.37m posted two weeks ago at the Texas Relays.

Campbell's performance marked the third school record to fall in the throws for the UTSA women this weekend after Lacee Barnes etched her name atop the program's discus throw list with a 51.52m (169-0) effort and Marilis Remmel tossed the javelin to a UTSA-best distance of 45.55m (149-5) on Friday.

Campbell also notched a fifth-place throw of 54.69m (179-5) in the hammer, another personal best for the local product whose previous PR of 53.72m (176-3) came two years ago at this same meet.

Meanwhile, Balli posted a time of 4:36.99 to finish first in the women's 1,500 meters in her first collegiate race in the event. The 2021 Conference USA Indoor silver medalist in the mile finished ahead of Texas A&M's Rachel Bernardo (4:37.90) to grab the gold medal.

The middle distance crew also got a runner-up showing from Brooke Lomax, who clocked a personal-best time of 2:13.32 in the 800m. That bettered her previous PR of 2:15.81 set on a tighter indoor oval at the 2020 Charlie Thomas Invitational.

In other action, Jorge Ayala logged a fourth-place mark of 15.98m (51-5.25) in the men's shot put, while King Antony Ma, Lirim Emerllahu, Logan Masters and Kaleb Campbell passed the baton to a fourth-place time of 42.07 in the 4x100m relay.

UTSA will return home to host the Roadrunner Invitational next Thursday-Saturday, April 15-17, at Park West Athletics Complex.
