Barnes, Remmel break records on Friday at Texas A&M Team Invitational

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Lacee Barnes broke the UTSA and Cayman Islands records in the discus and Marilis Remmel took down the school record in the javelin to highlight action for the track & field teams on Friday at the Texas A&M Team Invitational at E.B. Cushing Stadium.

Barnes unleashed a throw of 51.52 meters (169-0) to finish third in the discus and break a pair of records in the process. She eclipsed the previous school record of 50.12m set by Mia Hicks in 2018 and the Grand Cayman native improved her own Cayman Islands standard of 48.31m set three years ago. After measuring 51.32m on her first attempt of the day to earn a spot in the finals, Barnes posted a mark of 51.36m on her fifth try before the record-setting throw on her sixth and final spin in the ring.

Remmel made her UTSA debut a memorable one with a record-breaking and victorious showing in the women's javelin. On her first throw as a Roadrunner, the Estonia native hurled the implement to a distance of 45.55m (149-5) to surpass the school standard of 45.51m set last month by Sigrid Kleive at the UTSA Invitational. Her top throw clinched the win ahead of Texas A&M's Jenna Ellis, who placed second with a mark of 44.43m (145-9).

Meanwhile, Sam Healy and Faith Roberson turned in winning performances for the Roadrunners on the opening day of the meet.

Healy led a 1-2 finish in the men's long jump with a wind-aided leap of 7.62m (25-0). The senior from Ireland broke the sand twice at a distance of 7.47m (24-6.25) on his first three trips down the runway before breaking off his season-best measurement to grab gold.

Christie Le Roux also posted a season best with a mark of 7.48m (24-6.5) coming on his sixth and final jump to secure the silver.

Remmel made her UTSA debut memorable by winning the women's javelin throw. The

Roberson raced to victory in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 58.84 to finish just ahead of TCU's Kyla Robinson-Hubbard, who crossed in 59.08. The Wall, Texas, native broke the school record in the event two weeks ago with a 57.54 clocking at the Texas Relays and garnered Conference USA Female Track Athlete of the Week accolades for her performance.

Saturday's action is set to begin at 10 a.m. with the women's heptathlon long jump, followed by field events starting with the women's discus and men's pole vault at 3 p.m. and track events beginning with the 4x100m relay at 6:30 p.m.
