Yukich smashes 400m hurdles mark on final day of UTSA Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — For the second time in two days a UTSA record has fallen, as Alanah Yukich smashed the school standard in the women's 400-meter hurdles to headline Saturday action for the Roadrunners at the UTSA Invitational at Park West Athletics Complex.

Making her outdoor debut this week, Yukich clocked a time of 58.70 seconds to win the 400m hurdles and break the program's 29-year-old record of 59.76 by Valicia Henderson in 1992. The Perth, Australia, native sprinted out to a big lead before the first hurdle and cruised to victory ahead of runner-up Erin Derrow of Houston (1:01.34) while eclipsing the previous school mark by more than one second.

Andrew Pirog made it a UTSA sweep of the 400m hurdles, as the senior circled the track in a time of 51.84 to beat Baylor's Elijah Gifford (52.67) to the finish line. The San Antonio Reagan High School product just missed matching his personal best of 51.32 in what was his first collegiate race in the event in nearly two years.

Meanwhile, Ingeborg Gruenwald picked up where she left off in the horizontal jumps following a stellar indoor campaign. The Salzburg, Austria, native leaped to a distance of 6.27 meters (20-7) into a slight headwind to grab gold in the women's long jump. The 2021 Conference USA Indoor champion broke the sand at 6.05m on her second attempt to move into first place before posting her top jump of the day on her fifth pass down the runway to finish comfortably ahead of Kansas State's Victoria Alves (6.01m). Today's jump moved her into the No. 3 spot on UTSA's all-time performers list in the event.

The Roadrunners secured five silver medals on the final day of their annual home meet, with four coming in the jumps.

Christie Le Roux finished second in the men's long jump with a leap of 7.23m (23-8.75), just five centimeters behind the winner, Rodney Littlejohn of UIW.

Grant Szalek also registered a runner-up finish in the high jump. A two-time conference medalist in the event, he opened up his first outdoor season as a Roadrunner by clearing 2.06m (6-9).

One day after breaking the school record in the javelin, Sigrid Kleive placed second in the women's high jump in a tight competition. The Norwegian and Baylor's Alyssa Miller both cleared 1.76m (5-9.25) on their first try, but Miller outlasted Kleive in a jump-off to claim gold. Kleive's clearance vaulted her into a tie for fourth place on UTSA's all-time performers list.

The UTSA women logged a 2-3 finish in the triple jump. All-American and school record-holder Danielle Spence skipped to a mark of 12.54m (41-1.75) to finish second behind Baylor's Alex Madlock (12.66m), while Johanna Soover claimed third place with a measurement of 12.02m (39-5.25).

Brooke Lomax registered the other runner-up finish for the Roadrunners. The sophomore from Katy circled the oval twice in a time of 2:17.39 for second place behind Texas' Alyssa Duhart (2:15.14).

Lacee Barnes continued a strong meet for the UTSA throwers by grabbing the bronze medal in the women's discus. The senior and Cayman Islands record-holder unleashed a throw of 48.23m (158-3) for third place, a mark that was just shy of her PR of 48.31m.

The Roadrunners will return to action next Thursday-Saturday, March 25-27, when they travel to Austin for the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
