Abdullahi, Gruenwald highlight UTSA action at Charlie Thomas Invitational

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Bashiru Abdullahi tied his own school record in the men's 60-meter hurdles and Ingeborg Gruenwald earned a silver medal in the women's long jump to highlight action for the UTSA track & field teams at the Charlie Thomas Invitational on Saturday at Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.

Abdullahi peeled off a time of 7.80 seconds for third place in the 60m hurdles final, equaling his own UTSA standard set three times in 2020, including in a winning performance at this meet one year ago. The defending Conference USA champion clocked a 7.88 in the prelims before matching his own PR in the final to finish just behind the LSU duo of Damion Thomas (7.72) and Eric Edwards Jr. (7.78).

Meanwhile, Gruenwald continued her strong sophomore season with a runner-up showing in the long jump. The Salzburg, Austria, native leaped to a distance of 6.13 meters (20-1.5) on her sixth and final attempt to secure the silver medal just ahead of LSU's Aliyah Whisby (6.06m/19-10.75). That mark improved her previous season best of 5.95m (19-6.25) posted in winning the H-Town SpeedCity Series and it was just shy of her UTSA-best 6.18m (20-3.5) measurement turned in for bronze at the 2020 C-USA Indoor championships.

Grant Szalek registered his third consecutive podium finish in the men's high jump after clearing 2.09m (6-10.25). Two weeks after winning a tightly contested high-jump competition at this same facility, he topped 2.04m (6-8.25) on his first jump before sailing over 2.09m on his second attempt to collect the bronze.

In other men's action in the field, Sam Healy finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.80m (22-3.75).

Abby Balli earned a fourth-place finish in the 3,000m for the women, as the Pasadena native clocked a personal-best time of 10:04.41 to place just behind LSU's Ashley Lajocies (10:01.41). She shattered her previous 3,000m standard of 10:39.90 established at the 2019 C-USA Indoor by more than half a minute. Balli also clocked a 5:09.48 for seventh in the mile.

One week after turning in a record-setting performance, Lacee Barnes placed fifth in the women's shot put with a mark of 13.88m (45-6.5).

The Roadrunners will take next weekend off before they travel to Birmingham, Ala., for the Conference USA Indoor Championships on Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 20-21.
