Carreon leads UTSA to eighth place at Trinity Forest Invitational

DALLAS — Camryn Carreon tied for 11th place to lead the UTSA women's golf team to an eighth-place finish at the Trinity Forest Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday at Trinity Forest Golf Club (par 72/6,258 yards).

Carreon carded a 6-over-par 222 to register her second-best finish as a Roadrunner in the season-opening tournament for UTSA. After opening with a 76 on Monday, she improved each of her next two rounds by two strokes to move into a share of 11th place in the 74-player field. The San Antonio native carded a 74 in the second round, which was suspended due to darkness and resumed Tuesday morning, before recording an even-par 72 that featured six birdies in the final round, which tied for the third-best total in the field. The sophomore's 11th-place finish is second only to her runner-up showing in her last UTSA competition, the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational last March in San Antonio.

UTSA moved up one spot on the final day and into sole possession of eighth place with a 908 in the loaded field of 14 teams. The Roadrunners posted a 5-over 293 in the final round, a 17-shot improvement from their opening-round 310 and 12 strokes better than their second-round 305. The Roadrunners finished eight shots ahead of Nebraska and Washington, who tied for ninth with a 916, and just one stroke behind seventh-place Tulsa (907) in the team race won by Baylor (865). Oklahoma State (879), Texas (891), Kansas State (903), Baylor (904) and host SMU (906) rounded out the top six.

Nicole Polivchak ended up as the second-highest finisher for the Roadrunners, placing 22nd with a 226. The senior from Sarasota, Florida, posted a final-round 73 that included a pair of birdies after opening with rounds of 77 and 76.

Ana Gonzalez tied for 30th with a 229. The three-time all-conference performer turned in her second 3-over 75 of the tournament in the final round, one that was headlined by an eagle on the par-5 11th hole.

Hannah Holzmann matched Polivchak with UTSA's second-best final-round scorecard, a 1-over 73 that was highlighted by four birdies. The junior from San Antonio finished in a tie for 39th with a 231 (82-76-73).

Katia Mexsen rounded out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 67th (84-80-77—241).

Baylor's Hannah Karg claimed the individual crown with a 5-under 211 (72-71-68).

The Roadrunners will return to action next Monday-Tuesday, Feb. 8-9, when they travel to Kyle, Texas, for the Texas State Invitational at Plum Creek Golf Course.
